Mine is now 3 years old. Only the charging cable stopped working but I replaced it. Sometimes it hangs when I play a game or try to watch a movie using the cd. I don't know if this two faults should be alarming

I think the average life of a laptop is 5-6 years. But, this involves proper and adequate handling of the equipment. If not overused, a good quality laptop works well for years.

What do you mean "life"? You mean it will stop working on it's own after a number of years?

it depends on how you use it.. where you use it and how you take care of it. some people uses laptop with low end specs in high specs games and thats how it get broken so easily.. if you are a gamer i suggest building a gaming rig.. if you are just browsing the web being on fb then laptops are fine. but there some laptop brands that are designed for gaming.. but still.. desktop last longer than laptops..

My laptop is kind of old also. It's like 4 years now. I think it depends on how you take care of your laptop. If you're not taking good care of laptop it might not be going to last that long.

I'm actually not sure if there is an average lifespan, I'm sure there are many factors as to the lifespan of a laptop or a computer in general. I had a laptop for 8 years before it went out, the laptop I had after that one is 6 years old and its still trucking along.
But the laptop I have now I just got this year and it blue screens every chance it gets. Some laptops just last longer than others; but that's the case with any prebuilt computer.

I bought my first computer way back in 1980 when you had to actually create the programs in DOS to get it to run anything and you could only run one program at a time. Over the years, some parts just quit working, or the newer software was not compatible and I was more or less forced to upgrade the hardware just so I could upgrade the software.

I hated the change from DOS to windows and still find some programs that will not do what I could do back then.

To the best of my memory, I have now gone through 12 computers total since then, including the older desktops as well as the latest laptops. For me, that means I am replacing them about once every three years just to keep up with the latest mandated software updates. I don't download anything I do not need and do not play games on them. Most of the time I use any computer as a desktop at home. I rarely take them out of the house.

My most expensive computer was over $12,000. Almost without exception, every new computer has been far less expensive than the last. You can't really sell the old stuff because the next newest model is so much better and so much cheaper. I give my brother the old ones to use as boat anchors near his cottage at the lake.

My last laptop sort of still works. It is still running on Windows XP but it takes about 45 minutes just to boot up and another 45 minutes to shut down. That is the best the repair shop could get it to do. I have kept that one because it has a program with more than 20 years of research data that will not work with the newer operating software on my latest laptop. The space key does not work and newer software just won't work on it.

The laptop I am now using is about 2 years old. So far, so good.

Usually , well maintained laptops can last for 5-6 years or even up to 10 years. My record was a 9 year old laptop.

I'm actually thinking that this pertains to the battery of the laptop not the computer itself. Well, this depends now on your way of making your laptop clean from malware, virus that can harm your system. It's good if you will find the parts that are replaceable which means you use your laptop for as long as you want.

A good maintenance frequency can make your laptop last for years :D . One basic maintenance item is cleaning the exhaust ports of your laptops. These ports are very essential in keeping your laptop well ventilated. If these ports are somehow clogged, it may lead to high core temperatures  . This will eventually affects the performance of your laptop. It might lead to premature shutdowns and high temperature components.
I have my 8 year old laptop still running just by doing my maintenance routine and upgrades in a scheduled manner.
So the best way to prolong you laptops life is thru preventive maintenance :geek: .

Half a decade and a laptop is garbage. That is why I prefer a desktop because it is more durable. It can take hours of abuse.

It really depends on a few factors:

-Brand
-EU, US or Asia? -different voltage with ifferent frequencies that require different parts wich durability often depends on their magnitude.
-How you keep it.

A good brand, specifically bought for your contintents elecric grid, if well kept can go for as long as 4 to 5 years in optimal conditions.

Then it will start deteriorating. I'd say maybe another 2-3 years, but I don't think past the 8 year mark would be good, sure it will still work, but you'll actually seeit struggling.

Mine has been bought year 2008 and still working. But now seems that it has some issues, it goes off and the monitor is blinking. Even if i am going to bring it to the repair shop, i am sure i can't buy any parts available in the market. 10 years are good enough for this one. But now a days i think you will be happy when your laptop will be working for 5 years.
