Have you heard of Rewalk Robotics? Recently the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced a policy for national coverage for exoskeleton systems made by Rewalk. This coverage will extend to all veterans of war who have a qualifying condition such as spinal cord injury. Once they are fitted and trained on its use, thousands of vets will soon be able to walk again.
Rewalk is an exoskeleton that enables knee and hip movement through a powered source. This will enable paralyzed vets to stand up and walk. Picture a skeleton with motored parts moving as if in a walking fashion. There is a wearable brace support, a computer based control system and motion sensors. It is supposed to mimic the natural movement of the legs. Hopefully as the training rolls out and the product itself evolves, the motion will be less robotic and more fluid like water.
The are secondary benefits to walking. These include reduced tiredness, less body fat, a reduction in pain, improved posture, better balance, improved bladder/bowel function, improved mental health and sleep.
Talk about wearable technology. War is not always the answer but veterans of war should be taken care of.
