Google Chrome to start marking non HTTPS sites as "Bad"

Postby CyberFreak » 31 Jan 2016, 19:31

Just read This Story and it has really annoyed me. There are many sites that I think really need to be "secure" and use HTTPS but alot of the websites online don't. Alot of people set up hobby sites or little websites to promote their offline business. These people are the type of people that would probably struggle to understand and set up their site to use HTTPS. I think it is another case of Google using their power to make things how they want it and not what is probably best for the wider world. Many people (especially elderly people and parents) pretty much just know that https is important if you are entering payment details and a red X anywhere is bad. If they open websites and see a red X, even if they are only viewing a simple informational website about a local arts and crafts shop, they will think the website is dangerous and they are now had their whole computer infected with the computer equivalent of Ebola. I think Google needs to realise that not everyone is as knowledgeable as their staff and not all websites are as needy of being "secure" as Google's sites.

Ultimately yes I think all sites being HTTPS one day is good but it will gradually get their on it's own over time and I think it is far to soon for Google to start scaring casual computer users into thinking they are in serious danger on every non HTTPS site they visit.

What does everyone else think?

I think this will put a HUGE dent in Chrome's market share as people (myself included) refuse to cave in to their demands.

Little weird that Google does this, since https not even works correctly on Blogger. In blogspot blogs it can cause problems with templates and with custom domain it's not even possible to turn the https on. And it sounds like they won't even bother to deal with it.

Hopefully https://letsencrypt.org/ is automated fully in cPanel and other major control panels to allow for easy and free install of SSL. I know that BuyShared is one which already has it on their cPanel servers. I'm still waiting for my provider- I've asked but they won't add LetsEncrypt until it's out of Beta. Unfortunately, not every script/ template is ready for full encryption (but I guess a grey HTTPS is better than a Red X). I had to change a template back to the default to get a nice green bar because the template I like had a bunch of loading instances from non HTTPs sites (Google Fonts etc.). I do not think that simple blogs and business pages need SSL.

On another note, is ForumCoin going to head down the SSL path because of this?

For me this is alarming for my several blogs are not in https format. They are just a common http form. My problem now is how to convert my blogs into https format. Any help?

I think I am getting the reverse. My Google Chrome in my home computer cannot access Facebook with the message "privacy error" as if that https of Facebook is fake. But sites that are non-https are okay.

I take it you tried changing the URL's to HTTPS to see if they could be loaded?

Probably... especially if Google would start giving us a red X in Chrome. It will probably just put that little bit of doubt in peoples mind.

I wonder if this will apply to FlashPeak SlimJet (which is a modified version of Chrome).

Possibly although SiimJet does seem to go against what they don't feel is right such as when Google disabled NPAPI plugins by default. SlimJet made it easy to continue to use them.

Will they automatically set-up a Blogger URL to Https or do we have to pay for it as a premium account?

There were too many  I would like to just get a custom theme for the site instead down the track.

There's a Google employee in my household, and I haven't heard about this at all. I will talk to him about it tonight and see if I can get any clarification. If they do really implement such a change, that will be highly irritating.

That's ridiculous. There are far too many sites out there that aren't HTTPS. If Google really flags those sites, I imagine that a lot of people will stop using Google Chrome.

Or website owners will start using SSL for their sites even though it isn't really needed which will probably cause extra expenditure to owners who pay a fortune for a SSL certificate (not knowing that you can by they really cheap from some places or even get them for free) so Chrome users aren't put off from their site.

FYI I use one SSL account for $1 a month.

(All accounts receive a username.angryhosting.com sub-domain, which can also be accessed with SSL!)

Do you have security certificates installed? It's a Windows feature that you can enable/disable in Add/Remove Programs. If the security certificates are not installed, this can happen.

I see a topic about this has already been made, Google even ranks https higher (!higher) than http on their search engine. I guess that I have to move my websites once again for LetsEncrypt when it is done, I don't want to pay for a SSL Certificate just to improve my ranking.

You can get a free SSL certificate from Startssl which you can use just to satisfy Google.
