PC Building and parts

Postby Enigmasflame » 05 Feb 2016, 00:01

I am aware this forum is not intended primarily for this kind of topic, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to get opinions from multiple sources, and felt a little discourse in comparing parts could stir up some ideas.

With that said, I'm in the middle of acquiring parts for my build, already got the video card, CPU, mobo, KB+mouse. I've been looking up and following guides and posts that point out deals, trying to keep this build within a budget of $800.The purpose of this build is for a mixture of having specs (primarily looking at cost-efficient parts) that can handle maxing out last-gen games at the least at around 1080p (Dota 2, Stalker series, Skyrim with a few graphical mods), maybe keep up some of the more current titles (Warframe, Diablo 3, Fractured Space, Unreal Tournament 2015(?) ) , on top of that, I want a rig that can handle large canvases in 2d art applications (Photoshop, Krita, Manga Studio, SAI, etc) without choking. I'm already aware having an SSD would help in speeding up load and save times...maybe some moderate 3d modeling (Zbrush, Modo, large models in Sketchup...)

Here's my list : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bbQQt6

I'm just wondering if the power supply is adequate enough?

Does anyone here think I could get parts that are even more cost-efficient or just more convenient without going way over-budget?

Is my build a little too optimistic or is overkill at this point?

Please share your thoughts.

I ran my own computer business for 25 years and built hundreds of PC's, but today I pick the components and let my supplier assemble them for $20, then he gives me up to a 3 year warranty for almost nothing.

The point is, if I do the assembly myself, there is only the manf. warranty and if I slip while installing something and break it, it's all on me. Even with years of experience, things change and I don't keep up like I used to. It's not worth the risk for me.

Enigmasflame unfortunately I don't have the knowledge to answer your question. However, you might find the discussion in this topic helpful - Have you ever built your own computer?.

Good luck with your build and please keep us updated on how it is going for you.

I wouldn't buy an FM2+ board right now. I'd rather wait for AMD Zen to be released around the end of this year. However, if you're not in the mood to wait, I'd pick an Intel Skylake configuration. Both of those are my opinions, however.

Some things to look at:

- The AMD R9 380X is quite the card for its power consumption and budget value. Are you sure you aren't willing to sacrafice a little performance for that? You could save over $100 on that. And AMD is known to provide longer and better driver support than Nvidia. Nvidia has the tendency to forget its older cards once newer ones are out. Another thing to remember is that the GPU is easily upgradable, unlike most other components. Which leads me to my second point.

- Invest in the motherboard, case, PSU and CPU mainly. You'll be stuck with those things. :) Of course, you can upgrade your CPU later.

- A PCIe based SSD is ideal for read/write speeds. But don't worry if you can't fit that in there.

- 80+ gold PSUs are great. You may consider http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power ... 20g20650y1 based on the connectors you need.

Have you added the cost of the operating system? It sounds like you'd need Windows, and that'll go over your $800 budget with your current build.

It is good you seek help from those who have in the know of what to have for a complete PC installation and everything. Well, if there is no available person to get help, you may ask your personal friends about it or a good technician who is in the grasp of what you need for sure.
