Vivaldi

Postby CyberFreak » 16 Feb 2016, 21:16

Has anyone tried out the new browser called Vivaldi? It is a new Chromium based browser that is built by a team that consists of many ex Opera employees that aim to build a customisable browser.

I have used it on and off for many months and I think it has great potential although I think it needs alot of work still for it to be a serious browser.

I am curious this new web browser. I have just visited its site and started downloading its application for I want to try this browser. I have already used Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox Mozilla, Opera. I am going to find out how does it work. I have seen that this was developed and circulated in the web in 2015.

With so many popular browses out there that are competing for the top perch how does any new entrant stand a chance especially since many earning sites operate most efficiently on chrome. I guess since it is customizable it is a good selling point. Most people would want something to download set it and forget.

Looks like a very interesting browser and it seems that their main advantage over other browsers is the extent to which users can customise it. Thanks for sharing it with us CyberFreak, how do you feel it compares to say Google Chrome?

I checked it out today. Its certainly a little different from the other browsers. The UI is pretty neat and it tries to stand out with square edges in tabs and everything else unlike chrome or Firefox which have round edges. I liked how the color theme of the browser changes according to the website you visit to match the page. By default its red, but when you open twitter it changes to blue and when you open gmail it changes to orange.
Its very feature rich too. I liked the way it shows next to the address bar how much data a website consumes for loading. After some searching I found that you can also add adblock to it.
I'm not sure how much i am going to use Vivaldi cause every time I need to surf the net my cursor always goes on my default browser icon. I can see most of the people here are chrome guys but I've been a firefox user since the beginning and it will always be my default browser for sure :P . Also its quite safe to use the big names cause they are always getting security updates frequently which makes them kinda safe i guess.

It is based on Chromium so it will have a familiar feel to it but it is more advanced than most other Chromium based browsers. It has alot more settings to customise the appearance and the browser in general. The theme changing to match the colour of the site that @BuzzLightyear mentioned is cool although on FC for example it will be blue most of the time but occasionally when loading a page it will flick to be red for half a second or so and then change to blue. It is a beta browser so it is to be expected really. It is compatible with Chrome extensions so moving over to Vivaldi shouldn;t be hard for Chrome users.

It also allows users to save notes with an inbuilt notes feature, has a speed dial rather than Chrome's new tab page which I never got on with. I do feel that the Opera speed dial does look alot better than Vivaldi's to be honest. Vivaldi will also allow users to check emails using the browser aswell so it will be like a browser and email client in one. That feature is still being developed. It is pretty fast aswell. I did used to be very slow but it is speeding up now and probably close to being on par with Chrome. I still feel that Opera is best for speed. Vivaldi do release regular updates with loads of bug fixes and tweak and features which is good to see.

I do use Opera at the moment although while I like how they implement things, it is a bit slow in terms of development and unfortunately might be taken over by a Chinese company which alot of people are worried about. To be honest with China's reputation, I am worried to which is why I am trying Vivaldi again. The only thing that does put me off is the fact it is new and alot of things need polishing a bit.

Certainly a browser to keep an eye on as they have gone from not alot to a really good browser in a short space of time with some really experienced people.

I have never heard of this browser. When I saw the title, I thought the post is about the Vivaldi Condo here in Metro Manila.

I have been using FlashPeakSlimJet (another Chromium based browser) lately and really like it so far. It has Ad Block built in and you can set it to be on or off by individual sites, but the biggest claim is they don't invade your privacy like Chrome does. I also surf free advertising sites and they have mouse gestures built in to make it much faster. I use it on PCLinuxOS that has rolling updates and my browser gets updated a lot, which I am impressed with,

I like the ability to download videos in the browser without the need of an extension or using another website. The 2 issues I had with Slimjet was the outdated Chromium version (although I don't think it is as outdated as it used to be) and the appearance of the icons (back, forward, reload etc) as they look a bit rubbish and can't be changed by the looks of it. I didn't really use it long.

They work just like any other browser, but I usually use the built in right-click swipe system to replace them. For example when I am surfing ads or pages, I right-click and swipe a down and right diagonal to close that tab. I find it much faster than trying to fine a little X or use the keyboard.
