How To Run Old Games on New Computers?

Postby Masterminor » 17 Mar 2016, 01:48

I want to set up some old computer games from my early childhood that I found recently, but we no longer have the outdated computers that we did when I used to play these games, I want to be able to make the games playable on my HP laptop, I have heard rumors that you can get them to play, but I don't know how. I want to set them up for my little nephew so he can have fun learning with them as I did. Help?

That would be great to do and I am sure your nephew would like to play them too. I wish I knew how to help you, but when it comes to tech questions I am no help. This would be interesting to do though and I hope you find out how to do it.

That would depend on the operating systems the games were written for. You may be able to find an emulator for your laptop. For example here's one to run Atari 2600 games on Windows: http://www.dosgamers.com/atari-2600/ste ... 0-emulator

Just use the emulators, the search is full of them. I have one of those on my PC, my folks used to like some old fashioned games so I installed an emulator on a second disk and imported around 2000 hop-hop games for them. What a joy...

Yes, the main option is emulating the games...
My favorite games are point and click games and there are so many old games that I love to play.
To play some point and click games you can use a program: ScummVM. With that program you are able to play some point and click old games.

If you want to try it you can read more in their website: http://scummvm.org/

I'm more looking for something compatible with Jumpstart and Cluefinder series games. Do you have one for that?

ClueFinder games are written for Windows, so you don't need an emulator. Just purchase the CD and run it.

A couple of options would be to purchase an older computer just for games and install XP on it, or you could try a Virtual Machine here http://www.download3k.com/articles/How- ... er-V-00770

I was so fed up with newer games not being able to run on modern operating systems that I decided to dual-boot Windows 10 and Windows XP. However, installing Windows XP on a modern computer is not an extremely easy task. You have to add an AHCI driver (basically a driver for your hard drive configuration on a modern computer) to the Windows XP installation disc. However, it is great to have Windows XP on your main computer because it runs so fast.

Personally I don't suffer much for the old games, and I prefer to have fun with the so called 'world builders' and some online interesting games. But in general I don't play any games at all.

I'm sure you could do the search yourself but here is a link on that topic
http://www.ehow.com/how_4794061_old-gam ... uters.html

back on windows xp you could run games and programs in compatibility mode and it might play but now with windows 7-10 im unsure. I also suggest looking for those old games online or more up to date versions

Some old games will work on Windows 7-10, but many will not. Those that do run on Windows 7-10 often will not have the same level of performance that they had on older operating systems. For example, Rollercoaster Tycoon was very glitchy on Windows 7-10, but it works perfectly on Windows XP.

Compatibility mode has XP Service Pack, and if you use Windows 7, you can download XP-Modus: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... px?id=8002

For Windows 8 and 10, you can use Hyper-V by Microsoft (not tested): https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... x?id=36188
Guide: http://www.download3k.com/articles/How- ... er-V-00770

Alternatively, you can use VirtualBox but it may run slow.
