My Chrome Browser is too Secure

Postby Fergal » 22 Mar 2016, 20:25

I'm using Google Chrome on a PC with Windows XP and it is too secure - i.e. it is blocking access to safe sites and flagging them as dangerous. This applies even after I have unchecked "Protect you and your device from dangerous sites" in Advanced Settings. I can access the sites via Firefox, so it's probably not an ISP issue.

Examples of sites being blocked include Reditt and LinkedIN. Reddit error message copied below.

Would you please have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks!

http://www.reddit.com normally uses encryption to protect your information. When Google Chrome tried to connect to http://www.reddit.com this time, the website sent back unusual and incorrect credentials. This may happen when an attacker is trying to pretend to be http://www.reddit.com, or a Wi-Fi sign-in screen has interrupted the connection. Your information is still secure because Google Chrome stopped the connection before any data was exchanged.

You cannot visit http://www.reddit.com right now because the website uses HSTS. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later.

Re: My Chrome Browser is too Secure

I was having problems with Chrome last week and I never could figure out what was happening. I was trying to get to my eBay page and I kept clicking on where I needed to go on the website but it had some sort of ad overlaying the site's page. Every time I clicked it would open a new tab and start loading something. I would close out of it but I could never get to where I was going. I got messages from Chrome saying something similar to what you were getting. I ran Norton to see if it was something on my computer but it came up with nothing. I turned the computer off and left it. Then it just stopped doing that. So I do not know what happened and I do not think that anything happened with my personal information. Hope you can fix your problem.

I think you have to install some petite extension for XP, or just use FireFox. That browser doesn't block. Anyway visit Google Forums for help, they have all issues listed and I am sure you will find the right one.
I don't have any issues and all pages load correctly, but if I try to load something that is labeled as not secure or with expired certificate I just use FireFox. I have other alternative browsers as well, but they also have some issues as well as Chrome so I guess they are Chromium-based too.

Right now my default web browser is Google Chrome. I have the same web security measure with you. You could easily detect the site either secured or not by the protocol it carries it like HTTP and HTTPS. The former is not secured and the latter is secured by the sign of S for security.

I don't suppose you have a antivirus software or another program that interferes with SSL? I have Bitdefender and there is a setting called "Scan SSL" and it installs a local certificate (which in my case shows as Bitdefender when I click the padlock and view the certificate details) rather than Comodo or Symantec for example as the certificate issuer.

Also I had the same happen with Adguard (the Windows Installer rather than a browser addon) which needed a local certificate to remove ads from HTTPS pages. There was one time that messed up and I had to reinstall the program to reinstall the certificate which is what makes me think that maybe this could be a possibility with any program that does similar behaviour.

I had problems with Chrome on my PC from work too but I had no anti virus.

I found something on Reddit. Try this: Advanced settings -> Privacy -> Uncheck Enable phishing and malware protection.

Never encountered it with my Chrome, but then, I mostly use Firefox to surf the net. Have you figured out how to get around it in case I encountered it in the future?

Thanks for your help everyone, I still haven't got this issue fully resolved and still have to open some safe sites, e.g. LinkedIn, in Firefox.

CyberFreak wrote:I don't suppose you have a antivirus software or another program that interferes with SSL?

Thanks, I use ESET Smart Security and don't know if it impacts on SSL or not, will see if I can find out anything on that.

Thanks, that option is not available in my Chrome installation Advanced Settings, not sure why that is, but I don't have the option of changing that setting.

Try any of these:

Setup -> Advanced setup... -> Web and Email -> Web access protection
-> HTTP, HTTPS -> check "do not use HTTP protocol checking" and click
"OK".

People having problems accessing Twitter on Windows XP: you need Service Pack 3: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389
People having problems accessing Facebook:
If you are on Windows XP then it's fairly common for the root store to be incomplete. Try installing the update first: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931125

You need to install Windows XP SP3 (if 32-bit) or SP2 (64-bit).

These sites use certificates with SHA-2, which the Internet is transitioning towards. You will find more and more websites inaccessible if you do not apply the necessary security patches for your machine

Thanks for your help, RapidBlue. I'm already on Service Pack 3.

I've tried that, doesn't seem to be working yet, but will let you know if it works after I restart my computer.

Ok, there are pages that just don't seem to work on Chrome.
So if a page gives you a certificate error or any error, just use the Firefox.

Thanks again RapidBlue, there are pages which I cannot open in Chrome on my home PC, but that are working fine when opened by Chrome on my laptop. It's probably just another indication that I need a new PC :)

I found this: http://www.technipages.com/google-chrom ... l-settings

But Windows XP is old, I wonder how your hardware managed all those years, don't you experience lag, crashes and those kind of problems? :P

Thanks for your help Hugo, I am still having some issues and am resetting my settings in Chrome to see if that will help. Hopefully I won't have too many complications when that's done.

Yes XP is old, but I actually don't have any of those major problems you mention, sometimes it runs quite slowly but other than that is doing quite well. Hopefully I will be able to buy a new PC within the next few months.
