How helpful are online diagnosis and doctors?

Postby Decentlady » 20 Apr 2016, 18:15

With advancement in technology, there are innumerable sites which help you diagnose your illness based on your symptoms fed in their database.

There are online doctors who provide you with the most probable diagnoses depending on your symptoms and may suggest treatment option(s) as well.

Would you rather go for online diagnoses and treatment or go see a doctor in person?

Well, with no disrespect intended to any doctors here, I fear the doctors even when they diagnose me personally. Until now, at least 90% of the doctors I have met seem to prescribe unnecessary medicines, tests, and surgeries. (Some have even accepted doing that).. So you can imagine how terrified I would be to consult through Apps/websites!!
Having said that, I had once used an app called Lybrate to get a prescription on a small problem I had.. got a lot of marketing-like responses from few doctors (who should've studied marketing instead of medicine), but one doctor gave a decent prescription that worked fine.
But whatever it is, I feel it's always risky to depend completely on technology, esepcially the apps and websites, in medical related issues.

For the common illness, I think it is fairly all right to follow advices, but beyond that, you still need to be physically exam, X-ray, ultrasound or whatever it needs to have a full and trustworthy diagnosed.

Even with common illness, I tend to pick and choose what I want to believe or what I want to follow the advice. Everyone is so different from one another, same illness but can also have different effect. The best thing is to go to a real life doctor!

I think that those sites are only alright for minor illnesses. If you suspect that you have a major illness, it is always best to consult a medical doctor for a diagnosis rather than trying to self-diagnose and self-medicate.

I think that these sites can be helpful to people who only have minor complaints or needs advice. I have seen advertisements for a site like this and they state that it is only used for common illnesses and minor problems which do not need a physical exam. I think that maybe this would cut down on the number of patients that need to physically go to the doctor and would cut down on the wait time for those that do need to physically see the doctor.

I totally agree with everyone here, online doctors are best left for very minor ailments. I personally will always opt for face to face consultations, even though I do agree with laksh doctors aren't what they used to be. They've lost their bedside manner for sure, and can leave you feeling upset. I've even had a doctor ask me what I'd have him do for me! But even still, I'd rather go in. Even for minor ailments, I always opt to go to a pharmacy as opposed to online.

I never did an online diagnosis. I prefer visit the doctor. However I think that's important find online information about symptoms and signs for diseases. I also like to read and learn about others experiences about some diseases.
Do self-medication is very dangerous... :(

a online medical diagnosis is good for minor things maybe like colds or things of that nature but anything serious you will have to get a actual test for at a medical facility. I have used things like web md but they have not been much help except showing symptoms of possible things that could be wrong
