Vista and Windows XP?

Postby Decentlady » 27 Apr 2016, 00:10

I had found Vista giving particular problems to many users but Windows XP was sufficiently user friendly. Would you still consider these as a wise option in face of the recent Windows 10?

As long as the computer you are installing it on is new enough to avoid hardware problems, I like to use the newest version of software I can afford. Windows 10 is far superior in my opinion.

I have both of these OS on two HP laptops! The Window Vista OS lasted me 7 years, and the XP OS lasted me 2 years. I had no problem using them, but my HP laptops both suffered overheating problem!

I wouldn't use such old operating systems on computers that are connected to the internet for long periods. I think they have more security risks, as they are no longer supported:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/lifecycle?C2=11732

cheers,

Jon.

My daughter's HP netbook that she used for college has Window XP on it, and every time I turn it on, the warning site came up to say that using it is ok but there are risks. I am hesitating when I am on it and thinking that I should install the CloudReady to turn it into a Chrome OS for free, but again, this new software isn't supporting Window XP either. Still, I am in the process of investigating other options!

I won't. XP is dead to me now, and why use vista if you can use windows 7? Though I do prefer windows 10, if I have to choose an alternative MS OS, I'll go with windows 7.

Thanks as I too am not a fan of XP or Vista. I too think of not Windows 10 then atleast 7 will still be better and easily upgradable.

In theory Windows 7 should be safe to use until January 2020, which is when Microsoft's "Extended Support" ends. This means they stop fixing bugs and security problems after that time.

If you want to keep using the machine, I would suggest ChromeOS or Linux. There are several versions of Linux that are designed to look and feel a bit like Windows, to make the transition a bit easier.

Now that I had some time to learn Windows 8.1 I actually like it and have it on both of my computers. I still have XP on a 3rd computer not being used. That computer with XP rarely gave me issues but as stuff updated I found there was less and less I could update to because of using XP and it not being supported. I do agree Windows XP is very user friendly compared to windows 8 which I am using now but can navigate well. I have not installed Windows 10 and don't really want to right now. I like using what I am using.

No, Windows XP is outdated and a lot of websites do not support it anymore, while Vista will not be supported anymore in the near future. I would recommend Windows 8 at least.

A lot of supporting software for XP is also not being updated, like .net and java. which makes browsing the Internet a pain in the neck, so I finally replaced my main workhorse computer with one that runs Windows 10 and I am really beginning to like it a lot better than XP.

Don't forget that the free upgrade expires at the end of July so if you don't want to upgrade now but you do want Windows 10 at some point then you might have to compromise a bit if you want to avoid paying for it.

That deadline is even closer, if you consider that you want a month to evaluate it and have the option to revert back to your old OS with one click. I have done that with one older laptop that couldn't run it well and it was super simple.

I am not certain but I would have thought that aslong as the upgrade is done before the end of July, you should still be able to revert back even during August? It seems logical as it is the upgrade that is free and if that is done before the deadline, that is all that should matter.

That said, not everything Microsoft does is logical so who really knows

This link has some ideas about how to delay your final, free, Windows 10 upgrade -

http://www.howtogeek.com/253901/get-win ... -prep-now/

Looks a bit too much fuss to me. W10 seems ok on the 2 machines I've tried so far. Better than Windows 8, and not too different from 7!

I had been using win xp since it first launched.
Though there are latest win version but none could help me feel comfortable with the classic old style. :D

People said the same thing when Microsoft switched from DOS to Windows, but I doubt if those who were raised with Windows could even run DOS now.

It is possible to make Windows 10 look a bit more like XP or W7, if you search for Windows "skins" or "themes". It can be frustrating when companies update software and change an interface that you are comfortable with. But there is a limit how long you can hang on to old versions of software - especially when you consider the security risks.
