Boosters? Cleaners?

Postby Decentlady » 27 Apr 2016, 00:53

How does boosting help a device? What sorts of files are actually deleted, if any? How is it different from "cleaning" the device?

I believe it's just jargon used to entice more people to think they are paying for something different. I use a program called Sweeper that came free with my Linux Distribution. It's faster than anything I have seen yet.

I use CCleaner on Windows. It's good at flushing out temporary files that you don't need any more. There's also a function that cleans out old entries from the Registry. I think it's a good idea to clean your Windows regularly! :D

I have also used CCleaners on my laptop! It helps the computer running a bit faster, but I suggest don't use the Registry part of that software unless you really know what you're doing, and you can fix it should something stops working.

I haven't used it, but BleachBit seems to have good reviews as a Linux cleaner.

Sweeper is actually a KDE utility, so if your Mint has KDE you should be able to use it. I used BleachBit for several years and it's in the Package Manager, but it's more complicated and slower than Sweeper.

I'm actually very new to linux and trying out mint, don't know if it is kde. But I'll look for sweeper in the plugins directory.

It should say on the desktop somewhere, or click on System in the menu. I have been using Linux for years and it is WAY simpler now. I use PCLinuxOS-KDE and it comes on the desktop. On my laptop I boot PCLinuxOS-Mate from a USB stick, so everything goes back when I shut down with no files saved. I get a fresh install every time. That bugged me at first, until I learned how to Sync my Firefox and be back to normal a few seconds after booting up. All I do on it is use the Browser to access website and Cloud services.

Ccleaner is the best of the lot. I've been using it on my computer for long, and now I use it on my smartphone too. It cleans temporary files created during various operations, the browser cache, cookies, etc. It frees the RAM by getting rid of these files.

A long time ago. Windows 3.1 era, I purchased a Computer Program called "Disk Cleanup."

It did clean everything up. I went through the "C Drive" and deleted everything I didn't recognize. :(

I finally re-installed Windows and threw the "Disk Cleanup" program away.

Well, at least I learned what not to do.

Yeah, I used CCleaner and it really helps speed up my laptop when it is dragging so slow! I also use superantispyware to remove malware, trojan etc.

MalwareBytes seems to be the most popular in that arena, is there some reason superantispyware is your preference?
