Visual Basic

Postby oldfriend » 07 May 2016, 12:23

Is there an "Object Oriented" computer program similar to Visual Basic?

I have always liked VBasic but now it is outdated and not used for writing new programs.

So, is there a link where I can download a VBasic program that would work with Windows 10?

Does it have a Compiler and a procedure for making an Executable program?

I am using Microsoft Visual Studio to develop C# projects. Besides C#, there's another option for creating Visual Basic.NET as well.

I used to develop Visual Basic programs, but as it went outdated, my company just decided to move on to C#, instead of Visual Basic.NET. But, there are quite similar. You can pick them up easily if you know Visual Basic.

You can check out Visual Studio Community. It seems like a free developer tool where you can develop Visual Basic, C# projects as well. https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/prod ... ty-vs.aspx
I used to use Visual Studio Express, and now they have changed to Visual Studio Community.
This should work with Windows 10, as it's Microsoft product as well, but I have not try it before. ;)

Not sure if it helps or if it is what you are looking for, but I have been using SharpDevelop which is a free, opensource IDE for C# and it has been working very well for me. It is also user-friendly and relatively easy to learn.

In our university, we use Dev-C++ it is quite decent if you want to program in C or C++. C++ is Object Oriented too.

Thank you for sharing that. I am actually looking for a free or opensource IDE for C#, so I can install in another laptop. I have checked out SharpDevelop, it seems like it's only for windows application development, am I right? Does it support ASP.NET applications?

There is also CodeBlocks, a free IDE that you can use. It has also many plugins that you can install on it to enhance.

Wow VB! I loved this program but sad it wasn't able to keep up with the times. I always preferred to use it over Java - probably because it "seems" like a drag and pin type of language instead of actually coding the button itself

Hi kaka135, I use SharpDevelop for C# on a Windows machine. I'm not sure if it can do what you require. Probably best if you check their website for that.

There is a version called Visual Studio Express which was free at one time, not sure if it still is and it doesn't contain all the features of the full version of Visual Studio.

Honestly, I'm not sure as I don't use Visual Basic. I use SharpDevelop for C#, you could look through their site to see if it can be used for Visual Basic. If that doesn't work for you have a look at Visual Studio Express.

I checked their website and there was a comparison link between the two mentioned software, they are very much similar and also both of them support VB.net language, Is it the same is Visual Basic? I know it is its successor but I think I will be able to use the platform for either of them right?

Thanks! I already checked out their website, and didn't find the web component but only windows, that's why I was wondering if you are developing windows application.

@shamzblueworld I used Visual Studio Express before, I think that's good enough. But, I think they have changed the name to Visual Studio Community, it's free too, but I am not too sure about its features. You can check out the 2nd post in this thread. :)

Sorry but I don't know the answer to that, perhaps another member will be able to help you or you visit the relevant websites (links above).

As part of my work I use automated testing software called Ranorex. The software allows recording of software testing tasks, those recordings can be customised with C# and the software also has the functionality to allow the creation of code modules using C#. Hence, I have been teaching myself C# and SharpDevelop is the IDE I have been using for that.
