Physical exercise for stretching my hands

Postby germainebull » 31 May 2016, 17:15

What feasible physical exercises can I perform to stretch my hands while working on a computer? I need your suggestions on brief exercises that I can perform during my short breaks from doing whatever work on my laptop.

You can stretch out your hands then then roll your wrist back and forth that will take very few minutes

Before that exercise, place your monitor on the other and of the table and your keyboad in the middle of the table so your right elbow (assuming you are right-handed) will be resting on the table when you are using the mouse. That would save your hand from carpal tunnel syndrome.

As for the exercise, the best is the stress ball. It's cheap, buy 2 so you can have a spare.

I suggest you stand up against the nearest wall on your toes. Stretch your hands up over your head as much as possible. Stay in this position for 2-3 minutes and then slowly bend down, touch your feet, stay in that position for 30 seconds. Repeat the same procedure 2 more times. Good for back, hands and neck.

during break you can stretch your hands ,
1.keep the hands straight horizontal ,rotate the hand wrist clock wise for 3 to 4 times and again turn it anticlockwise 3 to 4 times.
2. second exercise keep the hands horizontal straight stretch each fingers for both hands .
3.Try to pull each finger of left hand by using right hand , same pull each finger of right hand by the left hand.

this exercise will help as we always keep the hands on the mouse using cup position down ward, that requires regular exercise.

That is an important thing to remember. For most of us, the elbow hangs while we type or operate the mouse, and that in turn gives severe shoulder pain in the long run.

You just rotate your hands whenever you are not typing on your computer. You can do this by sitting on chair too.

Here are some ways to stretch your hands!
raise your arms over your shoulder and move them in East, West, Noryh and South directions. This helps relieve tension on your shoulders, deltoids and trapezius that will include a small bonus of neck exercise too

Next flex and extend/fold and unfold your elbows till your fist touches your shoulder

Then with fist on rotate the wrist clockwise and anticlockwise several times.

To complete the drill, open and close/fist and unfist your palm/hand
Thanks suny for your insightful suggestion. I'll make it a point to try it every now and then whenever I'm using my laptop.

This is a useful tip - thanks for sharing here. Yeah, there are simple exercises we have to do to make sure blood circulates especially if we are working for long hours in front of the computer.

I fan out my fingers all the way one way and then the other way few times every hours or so. Since my wrists are also in pain I also rotate them when and whichever way I can.

@Alexandoy suggested the stretch balls, which I also use. It is a good thing to have!

Do you have Carpal tunnel syndrome? If so I advice you to go to doctor, I have a friend that suffers from it and she does this exercise:
- Start with your hands together in prayer position.
- Spread fingers apart as far you can, then “steeple” the fingers by separating palms of hands, but keeping fingers together.
Hope this help.

There is a doctor - I forget what his name is now, but he has a book - and he recommends that people who have any type of shoulder or hand issue, get themselves a certain type of bar and just hang from it. It is called hanging. He used to be a surgeon, and stopped , because he realized that operating was doing more harm than good, when one could cure themselves naturally via the hanging method. I also think it is a great way to work out the hands. and wrists.

I picked up a trick from the wrestler CM Punk, he does this thing with his wrists before his matches, kind of a rotating move to get some blood flowing. I'll link it here if I find the video on Youtube.

Constantly working on the keyboard and mouse creates a strain on the muscles of our wrist. I have found that flexing the fingers, opening and closing fists of both hands works to remove the strain. Squeezing a ball with our hands too is a good exercise.
