Mining bitcoin - minimum system requirements?

Postby germainebull » 20 Jun 2016, 16:12

If I want to venture into the field of bitcoin mining, what minimum computer capabilities do I need?

I'm referring to system memory, processor speed, and the like.

Generally, there are only 3 things you want to worry about when building a mining rig.

Graphics Card: This is the bread and butter for your rig and what is actually going to be generating your coins. Don’t cheap out on these
Power Supply: You will need adequate power to run your rig. If you are getting 2 or more graphics cards, don’t get anything under 750w. We’d even recommend 1000w+ in case you want to expand
Motherboard: The only thing you need to look for here are the amount of PCI-E slots (or places for your video cards). Try to find one with a minimum of 3 slots so you can expand if needed
The rest of the hardware doesn’t really matter.

CPU’s are virtually useless, you just need it to run the OS.
RAM, mining is not RAM intensive, so you don’t need to worry about it.
Hard drive, again, you only need it to run the Operating System.
Computer case, less is better. The less constricted your components are, the more air flows through and helps with cooling. Most of the rigs we build don’t even have a case.

You can read a full article about it here http://cryptosource.org/mining/hardware-requirements/

Wow!

Thanks for your insightful advice.

If I may ask, do I need the services of a computer technician to set up this rig?

NB: If your linked article has this info., you don't need to answer my question :)

Nope you don't, its pretty easy to set it up, and even if you're completely novice, you can watch youtube videos and read up some tuts about it.
But its not that big of a fuss anyway, I'm sure you'll be able to do it. You can always google if you are stuck somewhere right?

Do you have any mining experience? Is it still worth it? I see a lot of people saying they can't even pay for the energy bills even with Mining Hardware like AntMiners, by that logic CPU mining would be pretty much useless these days, wouldn't it?
I used to use bitcoin a lot about 2 years ago because I was starting my online SEO business and several of my clients were paying me BTC, but I've been away from this market since then.

Cheers,
Wal

You're welcome.
But after the halving, I think it is quite difficult for miners now as the their earnings are halved once again.

It's not worth doing on your personal computer or something like that, in fact I don't think it's even worth trying if you don't have one of those antMiners that are made for "dirty" work.
