Postby germainebull » 01 Jul 2016, 08:56

What myth about computers do you consider to be ridiculous?
What is the truth about this myth that some/most people do not know about?

One myth that I see all over (about computers), is that Linux is for Geeks and Propeller Heads.

That was true in the last decade, but it has come a LONG WAY toward being newbie friendly. It's much easier to install (if you avoid the geeks) and there are desktop versions you can try without even installing them (such as Puppy Linux).

I think anyone who spends much time online should at least try it, they just may find that Myth has been shattered. They also may discover that it's more comfortable when you don't need to worry about catching the next virus or having your computer hijacked by spyware.

I agree, and also to a common use, they are not much different than Windows or Macs, the only different would be lesser number of software for them... I have installed Linux in one of my systems and I have not experienced any more productivity, its just the same with less support for more of the popular software. So I think I am almost done with it and have not find any reason why to stick with it.

The biggest reason I use it, is to avoid virus and spyware while surfing the Internet. If I need special software that only runs on Windows or Mac, I don't want to have my computer infected with crap just because I wanted to click a few ads to make some money.

I see.
I did't know that Linux offers more protection against online threats.
Thanks for sharing this bit :)

That's just the best advantage (in my opinion). Another big one now that Windows XP is going away, is it runs on older hardware with limited resources even faster than Windows does and it's free.

Not many myths that I know of but I recently overheard a seemingly educated lady telling her friend that any information found on the internet can never be and should be trusted. I was waiting for my son's school bus and they were standing close to me talking about their kids' project given by the school. They were debating on where they could find information for the project. Seems like a myth to me!

Another Myth that is posted online often is, "It takes money to make money". Most of those here already understand that you can substitute time or experience if money is in short supply.

Back in the year 2000, a fellow student used to fear that the computers in our school could see us and hear what we said.
This student was always alert while in the computer lab.

That is neither ridiculous or a myth today. They can!

I have not heard of any myths about computers but the internet information should not be trusted fully because some people put up false or outdated data input.

I have older friends who have never learned to use a computer and some of them believe that....

If you use a computer once you will become addicted and....

Being on a computer is a complete waste of time. Those are the most common misconceptions that I've seen.

In my case, the one about becoming addicted was no myth!

These myths about computers have to do with ignorance and failure by individuals to undergo a paradigm shift as far as their assessment of digital reality is concerned. I am a practising Christian and whenever I quote something biblical or true but extraordinary from the internet some people dismiss it offhand insinuating that the internet is an illicit place full of lies and scams. There is also this prevalent belief not to invest or work online because the internet will crush. There two words 'crush' and 'scam' form the basic tenets of myths about computers.

This is an interesting myth especially considering that most of the financial world is hosted on the internet. Indeed, this myth is ridiculous!

One popular myth I know that formatting removes virus. This is not true about the rootkits and the boot level virus. And another same myth is that if your windows is slow, just format it and reinstall. This is something I totally disagree with. I don't think formatting is only option in all conditions. :D

I am one of those people who believe that formatting would remove viruses AND also improve performance of the computer! Nice to know from your post that there are other options too, so looking forward to know more about those. My computer is becoming real slow day by day although I have plenty of memory remaining and the OS is Windows 8.1 Pro! :eh:

Sometimes CCleaner (a free download) is a good tool for that. I run it every few days.
