Two questions on donating your unused computer resources

Postby Happyland » 10 Jul 2016, 15:13

There are some sites where you can share your unused computing resources on your desktop, laptop etc. For this distributed computing situation how can you protect your devices from the umbrella term of malware? It would seem like your computer would be vulnerable and exposed to whatever the end user would be using it for. Also would it slow down your machine's performance? Perhaps someone with some familiarity can shed light on these questions. Thanks.

You've spoken my mind.
I'm also asking the same question.

This is in relation to a distributed computing system known as suchflex.

Its good that you've mentioned the aspect of possible malware infection. :)
I had not thought about this.

So, does this mean that no user is interested in this post?
Or, is no one versed with this subject?
I'm at a loss?

Are you talking about programs like World Community Grid or Folding@Home that can use your unused processing power? The two that I just named are not malware, and you can adjust the settings so that the programs will only run when your computer has been idle for a certain amount of time. I haven't heard of any other programs that are similar to those two.

Interesting.
So, would sharing your computer cause a hike in electricity consumption?

I did spend some time as a Gomez Peer, but the money I earned was never received, so obviously I quit. I was not too worried about malware or other abuses, because I simply used an older stand-alone computer with nothing on it but Windows and their software.

Interesting comment here.

So, does it then mean that one cannot realistically earn by sharing his/her computer resources?

It is evident that you used a computer with superior specs.
Do you mind sharing this info.?

Not at all, I used a computer I had retired from service because the Windows was too old and it had 1Gb of ram and a 50Mb drive, making it pretty much useless for anything else.

The fact is, once you grant them access to your computer you have no idea what they are doing with it. They could be using it for DDoS Attacks and you may have the authorities breaking down your door some night.

I see.
I'd never looked at this matter from this angle.
Now I know.

Thanks for posting.
