Graphics card. What is?

Postby germainebull » 11 Jul 2016, 15:13

The admin of a certain distributed computing app is advising me to acquire a graphics card.
Problem is, I don't know/have never seen/used a graphics card.

Could someone enlighten me on what this is?
What is the average cost of a 500GB graphics card?

A graphics card is a piece of computer hardware that turns data from the computer into the images you see displayed on the monitor. You can read more about how it works in this article.

That will depend on where you are buying from, e.g. what country and the quality of the graphics card you want to buy. Have you searched online for one, e.g. from www.Amazon.com or www.Dell.com?

I'm afraid you're not going to find a 500GB graphics card because it doesn't exist, the power of one isn't measured in GBs but rather in virtual memory and bits. Check on Youtube for more information.

Here in our side of the world, graphics card are the most expensive components of the computer, ranging from 5000 Rs. to 20K Rs. and above as well. Sometimes the whole PC is cheaper than a single 1GB graphic card.

Thanks for your clarification. :)

So, would a standard computer have an inbuilt graphics card?

Yes they do, there would be no sense in having a computer without a way to display the results on a screen. What I discovered is you can get an HDMI card and use a much less expensive digital TV set instead of a monitor. I did that with my computer and have a 32" 1080P TV set that gives me much more space and the HDMI converter was less than $30 to hook up my less than $200 TV.
