Keyboarding Skills

Postby sherryinutah » 13 Jul 2016, 22:30

There is talk around the forum about data transcribing jobs and medical transcription opportunities. I know a person must be proficient on a keyboard to do that type of work.

Are you confident in your ability to use a keyboard?

People are accustomed to texting and using mobile devices; however, I don't even know if keyboarding skills are still taught in the public school sytem.

How fast are you able to type?

I'm pretty good on a keyboard; however, I'm not good at texting. When I type I'm only able to type about 40 wpm.

Oh, I'm terrible at both texting and typing LOL I envy people who can type without even looking at the keyboard. I have to look at it, and then go back to check for accuracy. -and even then, I find I still have some typos here and there hehe

Well, i can type well and fast. I have learned it all by my self. And yes after coding so much, I am used to of it now. But honestly these days I never counted my typing speed.

I am good at both, texting and keyboarding. My typing speed is 60+ WPM without practice, and once I do it for a while, I go 70+.

Interesting.
Can this level of keyboarding skills make the cut in transcription work?

I think my typing speed is 40 wpm but not sure about my accuracy though. I am quite slow when it comes to typing on my onscreen keypad because it is very different from a computer keyboard.

I am good at typing really fast but have now become a bit slow. When I was working full time outside home, my typing speed was 70-75 wpm, but now have become slow. But I am sure, with practice I can pick up the speed again, although I have no need for it at the moment. My current speed is okay for online work.

I can type around 60-65 WPM but only if I don't have to use numbers. The numbers are throwing me off and I made terrible mistake with them. I am confident with the position of the letters, and a few punctuation marks. Other than that, I have to look for where they are.

I remember when I was addicted to the game "Blackshot", a face-paced MMOFPS game. There is no voice messaging like Counter Strike or similar niche. People can use Teamspeak or Skype but I do not like to share my beautiful voice with others so I denied to use them - even if my clan leader requested me to use several time. That's where ... My keyboard typing skill come. Remember, it is a face-paced MMOFPS game. Whenever I see an enemies, I somehow, can, type out where is the location, what guns and etc in the matter of seconds.

Well, my typing speed and skill all thanks to the game. :).

I can barely text at all.

Last time I took a timed typing test I was typing about 75wpm, which is still very slow when compared to what office specialists used to type.

I am weak on the number keys though. My finger were never able to go from their "home" keys to the proper numbers so I still have to look at the keyboard for that. Otherwise I never have to look at my keyboard. I think they call that "touch typing."

But, as everything goes to phones and tablets I see typing going the same way as handwriting. A dying "art."

Do these medical transcription jobs really exist?
What specific medical skills are required?

I'm able to type 120 words/minute (I'm a programmer so I do spend a lot of time on the computer, it's natural) and I keep it up over 100/minute every time, even when I'm tired and write a little slower. Typing on the phone is a nightmare for me, thank God for autocorrect.
