Any Suggestions For A Laptop to Buy?

Postby IcyFirefly » 24 Sep 2016, 13:07

I am in a process of buying a new Window laptop for my son, and I have looked, feel and read so many different articles and reviews on which is the best laptop for students. Needless to say, my brain is about to explode and confused to the max.

My price range is between $300-400 dollars, but I have specific things that also must be met: light weight, long lasting batter, great processor, and have a decent amount of storage space.

Anyone has any suggestions? If it is possible, please include a link to the specific laptop that you're recommending.

Has he signed up with Best Buy student deals? If he has an .edu email he can and they send special vouchers which only can be accessed then. I had a great deal with $100 any Mac and I could use it on a cashback site (ebates) plus it was the tax free weekend.

See if they have nay good coupons.

Thanks @Lexi for that info about Best Buy student pass and I will ask him to do so! He is yet a College student and this is his last year in High School. With me, everything takes time to get to the point of making a decision. The laptop forum that I am in, has some good suggestions as far as brands go for laptops. Still trolling eBay and Amazon at the moment!

Ah, I think it's only for college students, but Radio Shack does offer 10% off with student ID.

You could look at Best Buy open box in your area for some deals:

I bought a new Toshiba laptop with a touch screen and run windows 10.

I love it.

I do everything I can think of on it.

Cost was around $250.

Bought it from Walmart.

Here are some of the models that you can find good

1. https://www.amazon.com/Asus-F555LA-AB31 ... 0000-35000

2. https://www.amazon.com/Performance-Prem ... 0000-35000

There are few others which you may find based on amazon search criteria. As I did with Windows 10, 200-350$ range.

@skynap Thank you for providing the links! I have checked them out and it will take me a while to make up my mind!

I am aware of you get what you paid for saying too, but since my son is going to stay in a dorm with a bunch of other boys, chances are his personal properties will be in use, so this is why it is not worth it to pay for an expensive ones. I like the second link that you've sent me.

@oldfiend That is a fantastic price, but when I click on the word "Walmart" I don't know which one you bought, and like @germainebull, I would love to have a bit of details, so I can start on my reading :)

I just went to Walmart.com and checked Toshiba.

This looks like the one or is real similar. My laptop is now several years old.

Intel Celeron N2840 processor
4GB memory
500GB hard drive
Windows 10 Home
15.6" TruBrite 720p HD display

It does have a touch screen and I use it for working out of the office. Such as drawing and making notes and etc.

It originally came with Windows 8 which almost demanded a mouse and a touch screen because every time you got around the edge of the screen a stupid menu would pop up.

So, when I could go to Windows 10, I jumped at the chance. I still hate Windows 8!

Hope this helps.

Unless someone is doing a lot of specialist media work. like video editing or sound mixing, pretty much any laptop will be fine these days. Most people are using laptops for looking at websites, watching videos, and maybe some word-processing. For these types of jobs, current technology is actually far more powerful than we need. The last few times I've bought laptops for me or members of the family, I've simply gone to the Dell site and bought one of their cheaper models. I didn't think it worth taking any more trouble really; pretty much any machine will do.

It depends, what do you need your laptop for? Basing my assumptions from your specifications I think something by Dell will do you just fine, their laptops in that price range are great.

My sister just bought an HP laptop from Walmart for under $300. I have a preference for HP since that is what kind of computers I have experience with and I really like them. Her laptop even has the CD-ROM in it which makes me jealous since mine does not have one.

If its just for school I would suggest getting a chromebook unless it is absolutely required for it to be windows. Chromebooks are cheap, easy to use, have a long battery life, and come with lots of google drive space.

I have also been looking around for a new laptop since the one I use at the moment isn't really to great. I think I may try and sell that one and buy myself a new one, I'll let you know if I find anything good in your price range! The ones I have been looking at though are in the $600s and $700s, but those are for more than just word processing, and from what it sounds like that's all your looking for.

I have been looking at the Inspiron 13 7000 series 2 in 1 13 inch mainly, but that's upwards of $700.

Let me know what you choose when you do!

Hmmm. How about processing speed? Won't you prioritize buying a laptop with a fast processor?
This capability is needed even for basic work, especially if you do it for a long time.

I am with you on this, because I am really weary about the slowness of the processor. I was advised from another forum that I shouldn't settle for anything less than i3 nowadays.

Still on my search, and so far eBay seems to have many options. The only thing left is to make a decision and go for it!

Lol. This reduces me to a stone age use of computers as my laptop has a mere duocore processor. It was however a leader at the time I bout it, about six years ago. How fast technology changes!

Most of the models that you see these days have the minimum i3 capability. Laptop especially have the minimum i3 models. If you are getting core duo or the mobile processor then skip that. Make sure that you don't settle for any RAM than 4GB. Because Windows 10 won't play well for RAM under 4GB.

I am aware of 4GB RAM as it is needed to have enough room for many other things. I would like to have a faster processor too since I hate sitting there waiting, tapping my finger for loading. Luckily, I am not in a rush, so I will take my time. I might even wait until Black Friday to find a great deal.

If you buy after the crhristmas then you'd get good price too. It's not like season has the best price. In fact due to lack of sales after the christmas you'd find the rate good too. I think i3 processor is pretty much available for most of the laptop model.
