Connected car to your phone?

Postby germainebull » 05 Oct 2016, 08:38

Way back, I came across a news story describing modern technology that allows you to link your car to your phone. Whenever you try to start your engine, you car sends a confirmation message to your phone. You then choose to affirm or decline the start action. Do you use such/comparable technology?

Sounds like a great use of two factor authentication to help prevent car theft. I don't have it on my car, however I do use it in other situations.

When I log into a client's VPN for work I receive a notification on my mobile (via a security app) to confirm that it is actually me that's logging in and to approve it. I also have two factor authorisation set up on my PayPal and Namecheap accounts. Once I enter my log in details, I receive a text to my mobile number, with an verification code that I need to add to approve the log in.

That does sound like a very good idea. They have come so far with this technology that it amazes me. My sister just got a new car and you cannot get into the car unless she unlocks it or is near it with the keys. I can see how the phone linking to it would be a better option so that thieves won't be able to get your vehicle.

I never heard about that technology, the only one I know is the one which allows you to connect the phone to the car to talk through a bluetooth connection. I wonder how dangerous can that technology be because phones are very easy to hack, it may seem safe but indeed it can be a very dangerous thing.

Another security feature entails setting your car such that, after it is turned on, it runs for about five minutes and seeks the green light from the owner to continue running. If it does not get a positive response, it shuts down the engine.

I think this is an actual feature on the new Mercedes cars but do you really need it? Come on, it's just a novelty that is cool but really not useful.
