I'm Buying a PC Soon, Any Tips or Advice?

Postby Fergal » 17 Nov 2016, 20:25

My computer runs on Windows XP and is really too old to be practical. I plan on buying a new computer very soon. Hopefully with an Intel Core i7 processor and maybe 16 GB of RAM.

My current PC and laptop are both Dell, as was my previous PC. I've been very happy with those machines so may stick with Dell.

Do you have any advice, suggestions or words of warning, for someone buying a new PC?

Thanks in advance!

It depends whether you're into gaming or not. If it's for office use, consider getting an Apple Macs since you are less likely to get a virus. One more thing is that, just because the PC has Core i7 doesn't mean it's the best of all. For instance, i7 U 620 has very poor processor despite being an i7, thus crippling lots of performance. And, don't expect every shop assistant will tell in details, because most of them will hide those subtle and unfavorable details on a PC of your choice.. Oh last but not least, don't forget to bargain for cheaper price, and ask for free stuff prior to buying your brand new computer. Good luck

This information is insightful. I may use it when I buy my next computer.
I remember a user here once stated that a corei3 computer is as good as a corei7 computer. Now that you've repeated this bit, I guess I'll hate to take it as factual.

Thanks for your helpful advice and suggestions Canaria. I don't plan on buying an Apple, I'm much more familiar with Windows PCs so will probably stay with Windows.

Thanks very much for that, I will research that further before buying anything.

Will it be a custom build or a branded PC?

Hi @Fergal that was my husband idea when we decided to buy a new laptop last year, he thought that it was going to be difficult to adapt to MAC technology, completly wrong.! We bought MacBook Air and it is fantastic, it has nothing to do with windows, it is quite intuitive and really easy to use, right now we know we choose the best one. We didn't bought Macbook Pro due to our financials but my sister has that one and she loves it.

It will probably be branded, but I haven't 100% ruled out getting a custom branded PC just yet.

Thanks for the feedback nela13, glad you are enjoying your new computer.

Sorry, I'd forgotten to reply to that, it will be for office use and for some programming. It will not be used for gaming.

I wish I could offer some advise, Fergal....but I always leave these types of things to my husband LOL Plus he much prefers Apple products, and I'm now a convert. I have to say I agree with nela13! Once you go with Apple, you'll never look back, and it's not as difficult to make the transition from PC to Apple as some may think . But we all have our preferences, so I hope whatever you decide, you're able to buy the device that satisfies all your requirements :)

I recently got a new Dell Inspiron 3650 with an i5 processor and 12 Gb ram with a terabyte hard drive and I couldn't be happier, especially when I kept checking Best Buy until I found it on sale for under $500. I have it hooked up to my 32" HDTV for a monitor and sound, so I can even watch movies when I am not using the computer.

I would also look into getting a PC with an SSD (or atleast upgrade to one yourself) as that will make a very noticable difference to the speed. They are pretty affordable now and if capacity isn't much of an issue, the cost will be low.

Well done oldbuddy, sounds like you got a great deal, I hope you continue to enjoy it for some time.

Thanks for the advice CyberFreak, yes that is something I intend to do. One option I was looking at is a "256GB M.2 SSD + 2TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive". How does that sound to you?

Are you looking for a PC or laptop? If the former, I suggest you take a look on reddit at /r/buildapc, you could get some good advice on how to build your own PC for pretty cheap. Don't worry, it's like legos.
If you're looking for a laptop take a loot at /r/suggestalaptop.

Thanks sir your comment made my day. While that maybe true, the hard part is to actually getting the component needed, and most of the time is tedious to handle, especially when ordering the parts online.

Tldr, just get a full set desktop of your choice, first hand. What matter is none other than its spec after all.

Fergal, you are better off with Macs then. it's unix shell-integrated, so you can imagine how nice it is for coding. Moreover, commercial-wise, it's mainly use by many company around the globe, so you can create software at ease.

I don't particularly think brand name is of that much importance with a PC. I purchased a shop-built PC (from the largest seller of laptops and computers in NZ: PB Tech). They make these upgrade boxes which have decent specs at a very good price.

Otherwise, I'm sure your specs will be perfect but it will depend on what you're running (i.e. you might need a graphics card). :)

I would advise you to buy a Chromebook suited to your lifestyle if you travel on the go, you should purchase one which is portable and with a solid state drive for fast internet speeds.

Thanks everyone for your advice and helpful suggestions. I use Visual Studio at work so will probably also use it on the home PC, this is one of the reasons why I don't plan on buying a Mac. Microsoft are going to release a version of Visual Studio for the Mac in the near future, but I understand it won't have all the features of the Windows version, at least to start with.

Also, I will be purchasing a desktop not a laptop, I have a laptop that meets my mobile requirements for the moment. This purchase will be a desktop for a home office.

Another option I'm considering, after seeing it advertised here on ForumCoin (via Adsense) is getting a PC from CustomPC. They provide for a lot of customisation options, as their name would suggest. I've been looking at something like this, on their website.

I have struggled to use Visual Studio with 2 or 3GB of RAM. I am sure you too have found laptops not keeping up with the RAM size in offer. And for this reason i think if you can add additional RAM in laptop, that would help for making use of IDE's such as Visual Studio and Android Studio. I don't have any specific brand in mind.

As I am using the laptop for the youtube video recording and making apps. For some reason the system dies on me after say like 2 years of use. So it helps when you have a desktop around for heavy work like visual studio and android studio. For testing and development RAM from 6GB onwards will keep you going. Any amount of RAM lower than that only slows things down.

I have Lenovo model right now and would buy lenovo again as I have faced issues with Dell and HP in the past in this side of the region.

Can you configure a PC? You can add an SSD, purchase an HDD as external storage and get 8+ GB RAM.
