I was thinking about the matter of TV broadcasts versus the number of viewers who are tuned in at a particular time. This matter got me thinking; Can a TV station tell the number of viewers who are watching a particular program at a specific time?

The simple answer is yes they can and do monitor the number of viewers because that helps them determine whether to keep running a show or not. That's why some TV series get discontinued 'before they gain traction'. For them it's all about the ratings and their line of reasoning is, if a show doesn't draw a large viewership, there's no point in continuing to air it.

However, I've always wondered if the systems they have in place to measure popularity take into account recorded episodes, downloads and video views because my husband and I never watch shows on TV. We much prefer to wait until we can download the whole series and be able to watch it back to back.

The method that the monitoring agency that rates the TV's viewers is through a survey. Representative of that survey company is roaming around and conducting a sampling survey to a particular community. Then it records those answers and tabulate the results. That is how I understand.

I think they pay for the service. Someone will conduct a survey and that is it. I have not heard of a new way of doing it.

Am not sure it's possible for TV stations to know how many people ate viewing their stations at any given time.

There is so much new technology out there today that they can tell what a person watches and how much they watch. that is where they get the ratings from.

So, I guess you mean that high-tech technology is required for this to be possible. If this is correct, such scheme would be possible in certain countries that boast of high-tech advancements.
