Online cloud backup related questions

Postby jacktheking » 04 Dec 2016, 10:20

Hey everyone

I'm thinking to purchase some form of online cloud backup and I do not which one is good. If you have any recommendation, please do post them here and tell me your experience. I am looking for company which accept Bitcoin since that is my only mode of payment online (of course, unless ForumCoin is also accepted. :p).

And I also have a few questions regrading online cloud backup. Firstly, say if a company offer a monthly payment plan, what if I do not pay for a month? Will they delete my backup or will they keep it until I pay?

Secondly, do companies that promise "unlimited" storage really mean "unlimited"?

Last question, which really defect the purpose of this topic, do online cloud backup really works? I mean ... will buying another hard drive to do backup be a better (and cheaper) alternative?

Thank you

For your question, I think it depends upon for what purpose you're gonna use this cloud? What are you gonna do with it? What you'll store and why you want to use cloud storage?
Cloud storage is useful if you want to access your data from anywhere and you travel a lot or you do have to access it from lots of different devices or you want to share the data with people that are far from you etc.

Personally I have started to use Sync over the past couple of months. It is pretty good value compared to Dropbox and seem very privacy focused. They also accept Bitcoin and allow you to enter fake payment details when paying via Bitcoin. The iPhone app (not sure about the Android app) is bit rubbish though. Does the job but can result in needing to remove it from time to time to view some files.

Unlimited usually means that they do not publish a limit although there will come a point where they will say enough is enough. Much like webhosts who offer unlimited storage an bandwidth. I imagine no backup provider will allow anyone to upload hundreds of TB of HD or 4K movies etc and 50,000 FLAC files from their music library etc. There comes a point where the customer costs the company more than they pay and that is when they will probably point to a get out clause in their TOS.

Buying a serperate HDD or using a cloud to back up is personal preference really. Cloud backups require yearly fees while an external HDD is usually a one time payment every x years when it fails or you want more capacity. It can be cheaper or might not be depending on the use, capacity and the reliability. Cloud backups is also useful for accessing files on the go. You can save a file on your laptop/pc and it will automatically sync to the cloud and then a couple of days later you might be speaking to someone and think "I could show them the document so far" and then on your phone you can see the file. Unless you carry around the physical external HDD, this isn't really possible.

I did use their free plan for a short while but I needed the space as I am using it to backup alot of videos and music files so the free space was used up pretty quickly. The free plan was good and tempted me to upgrade to get more space but the free amount is typically not really enough nowadays for a majority of people.

The main reason why I am looking into cloud storage is simply because I'd just like to backup my file in a secure place. I am not really looking into accessibility.

Sound interesting and it is good to know that they accept Bitcoin. I will be checking it out and may try the free plan before I decide if I would like to purchase or not.

As my main concern is a cheap and secure place to store a my files, I actually think that buying a new HDD will be a better alternative now. Nevertheless, I will still be checking out cloud storage and may give it a go too. :).

What specific security-related bone do you have to pick with Dropbox? I use the free version of Dropbox and would like to know if I'm exposing myself to any security problem.

I don't really have an issue with Dropbox however in terms of privacy, DropBox is based in the US while Sync.com is based in Canada which is alot stricter when it comes to data protection. Also they make a big deal out of their Zero-knowledge encryption. In other words, they do not know anything about what you store and all encryption is done on the client side so it is very difficult for anyone to ever get access to the files other than you.
