Attention span - my research

Postby Saru » 12 Dec 2016, 14:16

I did a research under the national research board or undergraduate students - the topic was about how attention span differs in boys and girls and how does it influence their academic performance.

The results were astounding - There is no significant gender predisposition to attention span and that attention span donot have any correlation with academic performance.

What do you think?

This is truly 'astounding' information, at least to me. I had all long thought that short attention spans are correlated with poor academic performance.
Kudos for performing your research and sharing your research findings.

It only shows that everything is in our 'mind'! Nothing else.

Well it depends on the environment and your mental states. Of course it has nothing to do with academic performance because if it does, Einstein will probably roll in his grave by now.

No. I think its reflecting upon how the way children are studying has changed. We just take things into our head, spit it off onto the exam sheets and then...poof...forget it!

By environment I mean chance of disturbance which will affect your focus, like noise pollution. That's why library is made so people can focus more. Kids are more likely to pay attention clearly but that's because they have less stress and pressure in their mind, unlike working adults with many stuff to worry about. That's why mental states affect how well your focus is.

That's interesting research Saru. Do you have any tips on how to improve attention span / focus?

If I get you right, a child who resides in a noisy environment will have a short attention span?

If this is true, woe unto the millions of poor people who usually have to contend with constant noise from many quarters.

It's a fact their focus will deteriorate, and this hold the truth to every human being. Noted that just because we lose our focus doesn't make us idiot, because those two are separated and unrelated case. Attention span means ones ability to stay focus on doing their work without getting their mind distracted. It's like focusing on a target during archery lesson, without blinking your eyes.

As for how long ones duration span is, it varies from one person to another, depending on many factors. For example, those who have healthy lifestyle tend to have extended and enhanced focus. There's also those born with natural talent, aka geniuses, will usually have enhanced focus due to their sharp mind.

This is how I did my A levels. I crammed beforehand and actually got very good grades but if I had to do them again I would fail miserably.

I have a very short attention span even now and my 10 year old granddaughter does too. Some studies show it is a personality trait. I'm generally very impatient in my everyday life.

I am surprised that this scenario exists in the UK (assuming you did your A levels in the UK).

I posit that this sad affairs derives from the approach of many lecturers. Majority of lecturers do not have the inclination to teach. They thus expose students to the practice of cramming.
