I've just noticed that my desktop has a strange notepad file with the title "B224F4D4.tmp". Obviously, I did not create this file. Will someone please offer an idea as to what this file is?

TMP files are temporary files that usually get created automatically by software so it shouldn't be anything to worry about. It should also be safe to delete although if the file is in use by the software that created it, it may not be possible to remove it yet.

As cyberfreak said, the .tmp files are created by operating system. And they are usually limited per session of Windows. You can clean them using the CCleaner.
