Online videos for kids

Postby amitkokiladitya » 19 Jan 2017, 16:10

How safe do you feel are online videos especially those shown on youtube good for kids. As these days the kids are glued to mobile screens how good or bad is it for them.
I know it is very harmful for their eyes but at the same time is it detrimental for their growth as well.

I don't feel safe for kids to just choose what videos they watch online. I read that there's a YouTube Kids app where they are only kid-friendly videos, but if I am not mistaken, this app is for some countries only.

All sorts of videos, whether online or offline, pose health risks to young children. YouTube videos are worse as they can be interspersed with unsavory ads. We need to keep close tabs on out children whenever they are watching videos online.

Just because something is done does not make it good. We may eventually find that allowing our children to watch videos is harmful. I hope this won't be too late.

I think it's really stupid what our world has come to. When I was little, I didn't watch videos. You know why? Because we didn't have videos back then. And I also think that the new generation won't live as long as 90's kids did or won't be as healthy as people who, instead of watching videos every day, wen't outside and played with their friends all day.

If only we could revert to this old and healthy way of doing things! Because we think it is chic to embrace the internet blindly, we are slowly 'killing' ourselves!

You are dead right.
Many of the activities that are done today are not necessarily good. Take the example of giving bribes. Although this devious practice is rampant, it has serious social, economic, and political disadvantages.

I do understand the concern about letting children watch videos on the Internet. In fact, it is harmful, but parents won't be around all the time and eventually they will surely find videos guided by his school best friend and so life goes. Children must be taught from the begining the difference from good and bad, and I know it is not easy. We never know what to say, how to say and when to say, but we all have to, otherwise they will be taught by life and sometimes without our guidance, which is worse!

My granddaughter watches Youtube stuff all the time and she is 10. I don't worry about it too much because she is usually in the same room as me and is always calling me to show me something she likes. I can honestly say I've never seen anything inappropriate, it's usually just innocent kiddy stuff.

She is also a child that loves to play outside so she is not sitting in front of a computer all the time. It's finding the right balance. When I was young my parents used to worry about us watching too much TV and said we would get square eyes!

I think I will worry more when she reaches the teenage years and wants a social media account, then I will have to think about who she is talking too, whether she is being bullied, grooming, all those horribe things that are attached to online activity.

Videos should never substitute an adult in mentoring and teaching young children. It is more beneficial psychologically, emotionally, and developmentally for a parent to interact with a child on a one-on-one. This is a proven scientific fact.

Supervision is best, but if it's a concern, there are parental controls you can use with your system. If you're talking about a mobile device, my kids never had those until they were grown.

I'm in the room while my kids are watching videos, ready to answer questions or steer them away from something they're not ready to handle.

I think it is not safe to allow your children to watch online videos on their own. The safest option would be to download, vet, and pass suitable videos over to your children.

I agree with the comment that kids need to watch videos but at the same time, they should be encouraged to develop a good manner so that they can become a good person in coming days. This will be helpful for their career also.

Also, there are many vulgar and violent type of videos in youtube or any websites in internet that should not be watched by kids. This might be very dangerous and fatal for their career and their life.

This is true, though I wouldn't say it applies to videos only. Exposing your children to any sort of media can be dangerous if it's not directed carefully. This can be said to the internet as a whole, TV, friends they make in school, etc. Most parents nowadays think they can just shove their kids behind a computer or smartphone as some sort of endless toy, I believe that's where the root is.
