Phone with silent camera

Postby germainebull » 18 Feb 2017, 17:21

I usually have to take photos discreetly during some of my professional activities. This is not always possible because people around me are frequently alerted to my discrete photography by the clicking sound of the camera. I need a solution to this challenge.
Is there a phone brand that has a camera that does not click while taking photos

My iphone does not make any noise when I take pictures - I think most phones have a setting to change the volume of the shutter sound.

you turn your camera to silent first before you take photos with your cellphone, then you won't hear the clicking sound

I see. I wonder; Is this a standard feature for all phones?

I sure hope this is the case. I'll investigate my phone and see if this is the case.

This is a useful feature. Do you mind sharing the make of your phone?

Stock Android doesn't have a camera setting for disabling the camera shutter sound. Instead, you will have to turn your notifications/alerts profile to silent, do not disturb or vibrate. This can be done using the volume keys on the side of your device that act as master volume controls.

I gleaned this information from the web.

Does this mean the camera shutter sound is equivalent to the general phone volume?

This is a useful discussion. I would not want to alert the subject of my photography of my discreet photo activities.

Yes. This could cause problems with whatever human subject you are taking photos of.

Not all phones allow you to turn off the shutter sound. In Japan, all smartphones sold have the shutter sound turned on and they cannot be turned off. They do this because some people take upskirt photos of females on the trains. So it is now required by law to have a shutter sound so people cannot secretly take pictures of people.

If your phone does not allow you to turn off the shutter sound (if you can't turn it off when you're in silent mode, then you probably can't turn it off), then there are two solutions. The first one is to hack your phone and manually change your camera's settings to switch off the shutter sound. There are instructions online, but I don't recommend it unless you know a lot about phones. You don't want to mess up along the way and screw up your phone.

The second is to simply install another camera. There are plenty of camera apps out there that don't have shutter sounds. You can download one of those apps and solve your problem easily.

I think this is the most viable of your two suggested options. I will have to try it out.

Thanks for sharing.
