Problem with PC

Postby sprite1950 » 04 Mar 2017, 12:23

Sometimes when I allow my computer to idle for a while it won't wake up. Nothing will revive it, even pressing the monitor button so I just have to switch the main power source off. It starts up as normal and then tells me that 'Chrome didn't shut down properly, restore?'. What can I do about this?

You could try doing this. Sometimes the mouse and keyboard are set so that they do not wake the computer. I assume that you are using Windows 7, 8.1, or 10.

1. Hit the Windows logo on your keyboard and X.
2. Click on Control Panel.
3. Change "View by" to "Large icons."
4. Click on "Device Manager."
5. Under "mice and other pointing devices," right-click on your mouse and click "Properties."
6. Under "Power Management," make sure that the "Allow this device to wake the computer" setting is checked. If it is checked already, try unchecking it and checking it again.
7. Do the same for your keyboard under "Keyboards."

If that doesn't help, there are other things that you could try. :O

I guess there is something wrong with the power supply component inside your PC.

That's a possibility, but the fact that she does not have any other issues with her computer makes me think that the power supply should be in decent shape. Hopefully that's the case because buying a new power supply can sometimes get a tad pricy depending on the computer's specs, and it doesn't really make your computer faster or anything, which is always a bummer.

Strangely enough it hasn't done it today but yesterday it happenerd 3 times. I have had a bit of trouble with the mouse not connecting too. I have to mess about with the connecion at the back of my monitor to get it to work. Could this be related?

I suppose that if the mouse is disconnecting, it might be harder to wake the computer if the keyboard isn't able to wake it up. How old is your mouse?

The problem might not be the mouse. It could be something as simple as a damaged cable. I've never had that problem with a mouse, but it has happened to me with my modem in the past.

I'm not sure whether that's related to the problem with the computer not waking up though.

Usually, the cord on a mouse cannot be replaced easily. :( It could also be a problem with the USB port itself, but that seems less likely.

Yes. A computer technician once stated that it would be better to buy a new computer than buy a powee supply component.

Find out processes that are running. I am sure this way things can be fixed. Take it to the local shop if the problem occurs again.

So old I can't remember. Since I fiddled with the USB port it hasn't happened again. I've got another one so I'll try that one as I think it could be the problem. I didn't realise it could be a factor in the pc not waking up.

Thanks to everyone that offered advice.

I didn't think of that. I never examined my mouse closely enough to realise that the cord can't be detached. I guess the reasoning behind making them that way is that we're forced to spend money on a new mouse when there could be a simpler solution.

It would be really nice if the cord could be replaced, especially if your pet chews it or something. D:

That's good that you haven't had the issue since then.

I second your opinion. I have had several mice die on me. I am still trying to figure out why this happens.

That's not a problem I've ever had, though a mouse can give problems if the underside gets too dirty. However I've had cable problems with my modem in the past so I figured it could happen with a mouse too. And as @MeowsePad said, if one has pets, they are likely to chew a cord at some time. We had a dog chew through the cord of a heater once. Luckily it wasn't plugged in at the time.

This is a reasonable possibility. A computer of mine once had issues with the internal power supply. This is resolved best by purchasing a new power supply unit; a costly venture.
