New laptop won't install Malwarebytes

Postby sprite1950 » 06 Mar 2017, 09:48

I am putting this question up on behalf of my sister in the hope that you techie people can help.

She bought a Lenovo laptop and has been trying to install Malwarebytes but it just refuses to do it. It already has Mcafee preinstalled and she has managed to put Superantispyware on it. Is there a reason that this could be happening?

I guess mcaffee is in conflict with malwarebytes. or maybe superantispyware could be having conflict. I suggest getting rid of superantispyware. and see what happens from there.

I have SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes on my computer so that shouldn't be the conflict. What is the "error" that she is getting when she attempts to install Malwarebytes? If you tell us that, then it'd be easier to find a solution.

The error would be helpful to know. Is she intending on using the Mcafee protection installed? If not, removing it might be beneficial although Malewarebytes should be ok to use alongside all major AV's without any issue. If the error is coming from McAfee then it does highlight a compatibility issues between the two. It it is a windows error, it may be another issue. Maybe trying to redownload the installer might work. It may not have downloaded properly or been corrupted in some way maybe.

I managed to install superantispyware for her successfully and Malwarebytes wouldn't work even before this so I don't think this is the problem.

I don't actually get an error message. It tries to install it and then .. nothing. I will have to mess around with it and let you know.

Does anyone know anything about McAfee? Is it worth keeping?

Update: Well what a fiasco! It turned out to be McAfee which was stopping Malwarebytes. I have successfully uninstalled it which wasn't easy as it just refused to play ball and be uninstalled through programmes. I had to go into settings and do it that way.

I have now installed Malwarebytes and Bitdefender which I have on my own machines although apparently we may still get trouble with McAfee as it leaves a lot of junk behind after uninstallation.

Hmmm.
Malewarebytes versus other anti-virus programs.
Isn't Malewarebytes an antivirus program?

The free version only scans and is not offering "Real time" protection like AV's like Mcafee, BD and Norton offer for example so there should be no issues at all. The premium version is now being promoted as an antivirus replacement although it does operate differently from traditional AV's and offers real time protection unlike the free version.

So, I can replace my traditional antivirus?
Yes! As I said above, over 50% of our customers already have too. We believe in layered defense and built Malwarebytes 3.0 to provide the right mix of proactive and signature-less technologies to combat modern threats and zero-day malware. The combination of our Anti-Malware, Anti-Exploit, Anti-Ransomware, Website Protection, and Remediation technologies has you better covered against modern threats than the traditional antivirus companies that charge more for less effective protection.

Can I still run Malwarebytes alongside my Symantec, McAfee, etc.?
Certainly! We built Malwarebytes 3.0 to be compatible with all major antivirus software, even Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Time protection is a necessary quality of an antivirus program, especially for those of us who are bound to loiter around in the internet space. If malwarebytes offers this feature, I guess I have to review it seriously.
