Programming turns 70 years old

Postby kaka135 » 20 Apr 2017, 07:29

I just read this from CodeAcademy's newletter. The world's first general-purpose programmable electronic computer, ENIAC ran the first code in 12 April 1947 and all the first professional programmers are women. It's interesting to know this part of history in programming world.

It looks like there is even a film for this: http://eniacprogrammers.org/ ;)

I was a computer programmer for an IBM S/370 in the 1970s. That means there were many who were older than me, waheehee.

I used to learn FoxPro programming when I was in my 30s, got my diploma but never had the chance to use it that I landed myself as a housewife. Programming is difficult to learn, kudos to the first programmer

I love learning about history. I never thought that we already have computers back in the days. I thought it started in the mid 80's since I am seeing someone using computer in MTV.

Wow that before I was born and I actually had no idea about it and like grecy I thought the introduction of computer technology came much later. Thanks for bringing this to our attention kaka :D

* * It was before that. I went to university in the 70s and took computer programming courses and I know computers were around before that time. :)

I remember talking about the ENIAC in my first programming lectures, I also remember about my first programming languages, Pascal, Cobol and Basic, by that time there was also Fortran. The first game I played was pure basic and it was about two gorilas throwing bananas to each other, can you imagine people spending hours playing a game like that?

Wow, I really thought we only have that in the 80's. I even watched the movie Pretty in Pink and they have computer scene. Yes, I remember in the movie Superman, which was on the 70's, it has a lot of computers.

Really!?

Then ... what happened?
Why don't we have many women programmers today?

Interesting history. Programming has developed a lot over the years with modern computers. What happened to women?

I guess women were swept aside by various factors including the fact that our world is generally patriarchal. I can't help wondering how the situation would be if women were allowed to thrive in the programming field.

* * All it takes is for one woman to become a super star in that field and then she can give her struggling sisters a helping hand, since the bros wanna try to keep 'em down. Of course, then everybody will yell and scream that she's discriminating.
