As soon as you open an account, the system makes suggestions for other tweeters to follow. That's good. Because more often than not they follow back. Every following has to have a starting point. Right? If you want followers, you must first start following other tweeters. Even if they don't follow back, posts begin to show up in your stream and you can get an idea of what's going on in Twitterland!
As for Twitter benefits? There are many. But the primary benefit is it streamlines my work process.
(1) If a tweet is posted it can be automatically shared to my Facebook profile and/or page via the interface process.
Just go into your profile settings, click on "Apps" and link your Facebook account. You can associate your profile and a a page. Some of my other social network accounts like LinkedIn and Tumblr, for example, give me the option to associate my Twitter account. So whenever I post there, it tweets automatically. Automated social sharing is a wonderful thing!
(2) Embedded tweets can be used at my websites and/or blogs. Saves me time writing.
See a tweet you like? In the right corner there is arrow to a drop down box. Click on it an you'll see the option "Embed Tweet". Click on that and it will give you the coding to place at your site. Simple. Surely you must have seen embedded tweets at other websites and blogs. Lots of people use them.
(3) A tweet of 280 characters can be expanded into a full blown blog post or article (although I have never done that, but at least I know I can). Consider Twitter and/or your tweets a resource where ideas for blog posts are generated. It's like an awesome content source.
(4) Since most websites and blogs have social sharing buttons it's easy to just click the Twitter button and circulate links to your articles, posts, etc. and share content published by anybody else that you like. It's easy to share, which is, in essence, sending and receiving traffic.
(5) Twitter is really good for quick research on a topic. The hashtags (#) are amazing! Just type a term in the search box with a hashtag in front of it and Voila! If I'm being honest, you don't even need to use the hashtag sign. Type in a word and you'll still get results. However, many tweeters use hashtags religiously. So it's probably a good idea to search that way.
(6) There are several tools you can use to help your manage you Twitter activity. At present, I use two (2). Crowdfire and Commun.it. If you're just getting started you may not need these. But if you stay active and start gaining followers, these will come in handy.
These are, in my opinion, advantages of using Twitter. There are more. The more you use Twitter, the more you will find ways to use Twitter.
There is a lot of business news about Twitter that is giving off signals that the owners are not making as much profit from this social media tool as they had hoped for. Nobody knows what the future holds for this company but I, for one, wish them success!
