Will AI take your job?

Postby Sam » 09 Jun 2017, 23:24

In New Zealand, we have a new 5 part live TV series asking the BIG questions.

One extremely important one is: Will your job exist in 20 years?

A lot of the public said yes. I'm not so sure. As a Computer Science and Finance/Accounting student, I can see huge potential for automation and AI in almost every field. Obviously the technology has to live up to it's potential. Our understanding of AI requires further development (how AI self-improves/ learns) and we need better hardware.

If you want to get into AI... (it's a huge topic and I haven't explored it :P)

Yes, it is 99% possible as AI can do better than us in many aspects ! But i think the most concerned things of AI is that they may take over the world . Only one AI robot can overthrow human!

Well, my field before retiring was Commercial Refrigeration.

AI will have a tough time turning a wrench.

There is a lot however, that AI has replaced in our troubleshooting and repair though.

When I was in high school, we were afraid that AI would replace or jobs. In a lot of areas, that has been the case.

Yes i think artificial intelligence will take over almost every job in the near future, leaving workers jobless and crime increases

That's a very good question, Sam. I'm also inclined to believe that with the advancement of modern technology, it will eventually happen. I mean AI may not replace all human resources, but I strongly believe it will substantially reduce the amount of people required to do any speicific job. AI and machinery often means a faster more efficient output, but these things break down and need human interaction, too.

I don't think so. But it can be happened to some extent. But not all the jobs will be vanished because of it.

I work in software testing, started off doing manual testing now I create automated software tests using a tool called Ranorex. I do believe AI will have a serious impact on software testing in coming years. AI could potentially learn about the common issues that software has, then create and run automated tests to check for those issues / bugs. Report those bugs and maybe even try to fix some of those issues. It's a fascinating and exciting area.

Good point :) Saying that there will probably be less need for wrench turning with advances in AI and electronics. I'd imagine that there is less wrench turning required for a Tesla electric car, than a traditional petrol or diesel engine car, for example.

AI has essentially already arrived for the industry in which I work ie the health and fitness industry, what with all the apps etc. And yet, you can still earn money as a personal trainer or yoga teacher, and I haven't noticed the drop in demand.

There is no doubt about it. If the technology will continue to boom fast, there is a possibility that in the near future AI will replace some if not most human workforce.

Good question. Since I study power engineering I guess even now it is all starting to be automated, to reduce the failures and reduce time of fixing broken parts of the systems. So I think that in 20 years it will pretty much all, or at least the majority of it, be automated and computerized so our only work will be making projects and creating the power plants.

I am thinking that it surely is going to take away lot of jobs. I am hoping that AI can be helpful for improving existing skills.

You can see that car manufacturers are using AI, robots, machines to assemble vehicles, less humans are used to monitor the process. This means that people are losing their jobs in factories. Altough AI could reduce human errors, it will rise unemployment status and poor community.

I don't think so. Even though AI robots and machines are becoming popular, it cannot replace a human fully. However, learning to fix and debug the AI hardware is a good job opportunity in the future. :)

If you're a functionary then yes, a computer will probably take your job in the near future. If you're in the tech field then you man the machines, So your job most likely won't be stolen by one. I think everyone has to learn how to use a computer or the internet if they want to be gainfully employed in the future. It also wouldn't hurt to learn how to build or fix a pc, and install hardware and software.

AI could replace all jobs requiring skills. I was a machinist but my job was replaced by a CNC machine. Now, an unskilled worker can operate a CNC machine, how ironic  . But slaughtering job can not be replaced by an AI, this job needs an eye on better judgement.

I guess we all need to learn how to maintain/repair AI, robots, machines, etc. if we want work.

I think you bring up another issue of concern, @jonemil24. I can see a lot of companies using machines that would do a substandard job, if doing so makes them more money. It's all about short term profits these days, rather than reputation, quality, etc.
