There are plenty of search engines available. Some sites have malware such as cool something I don't remember the exact name but be careful what you use. Some sites are stand alone search engines while others have a diversified product and service mix such as Microsoft and Google. Some are more well known and bigger than competitors for two main reasons:
1. The site is well financed by the capital markets, private equity and hedge funds.
Money provides access to better technology, expertise, management, and marketing which can positively influence the quality and array of products and services that a company offers. It even provides access to political capital.
2. The site was created to be a game changer. Game changers can come along and take an idea or product and make something much more attractive and steal the show. A game changer still needs capital to make things work and to reach the masses.
A game changer will even benefit from free advertising because the media will report on their every move (usually the reporting is positive). Millions of people will hear this good news and will not want to be left out. They will buy the product or use the service.
These reasons apply not just to search engines but to almost any situation. For example the playing field for a small social media site has become uneven with a certain major one because of some distinct major differences. Only a few of which I have noted.
There are smart people with bright ideas but unfortunately don't have access. Most of the major products are backed by big dollars. Many companies have the financial power to do as they please. They can do what they want when they want as long as they don't over step any laws, regulations etc. But again having political capital (which they have) helps to lessen the burden.
