Driverless Cars

Postby sprite1950 » 25 Aug 2017, 13:24

Driverless cars are set to hit our roads in the next 2-7 years. In the UK there is a plan to do a trial on lorries on our motorways to see how they work out next year.

Many people are not sure about these vehicles because they are afraid they will fail and cause dangerous situations on our roads but as most crashes are caused by human error the argument for this is that roads will become safer. When a survey was carried out recently more than half said they would not want to travel in a fully autonomous car although 70% said they would be happy to travel in one where they had some control if they felt it was necessary.

I have a very poor sense of direction and getting lost worries me so for me this would be a wonderful opportunity and would make life easier not only for people like myself but those who were disabled such as the blind. How would you feel about owning or at least being a passenger in one of these cars?

I can understand that human error causes accidents, but isn't it humans that are making these cars and programming them? So in reality you aren't taking out the human error element entirely. My concern would be what would happen when something electrical or computer related goes wrong with the driverless cars then what happens? Who takes over when the car malfunctions? I don't know as I could trust the car being in control. I mean it's not like it is going to be KIT from Night Rider.

I would consider travelling in a driverless car dangerous as what if pedestrian comes in path of driverless car. I think cars with drivers is safe

I thought about the danger factor but I have read plenty on the subject and I am now of the opinion that they will make our roads safer. There are so many things to consider but I don't think they would put them on the roads before they were safe and before doing many trials so I'm quite excited about them .. not that I will ever be able to afford them when they first come out. :(

I was reading that the average car lasts around 13 1/2 years so if you buy a new car today and keep it until it packs up, it will be the last one of it's kind because in 13 years they will all be autonomous. Of course there will be plenty of old cars still running around but we will not be able to by a new one operated by a driver.

I think it's really not a good idea. Driverless cars; what will happen to all this taxi men that may loose their jobs because of this technology.

The way humans drive these days, maybe it would be better if we let the cars drive themselves or pre-programmed vehicular computers take the wheel for a bit.

You are right. Technology is cool, but just like any other thing, it has it's downside. Though I don't think driverless cars would completely take over, plus you know what developing countries go through.

That is why I do say that robots maybe taking over some of our jobs which you just stated an example above.

I would also want to try driverless cars but at first, I wouldn't want to be alone. lol

For sure they will be nice if it can work effectively though initial challenge will be there. I am sure the driverless cars will be control from a source so hitting or accident might be very minimal.
