Social Media Learning or Four Cornered Classroom Learning?

Postby malot12 » 30 Oct 2017, 08:21

A new preference for today's young generation to learn is thru ICT such PowerPoint presentation, video presentations, and most preferably thru Social Media posts and groups. Classroom learning in the four cornered of the school are now obsolete to them, with which writing, reporting, and memorizing are the most common. Due to what today's trend, comprehension and speaking orally are depreciating too. We may learn from Social Medias a lot but there are still lacking. Comparing the millennials generation to 80s and 90s generation created wide gaps when it comes to comprehension and personal touch learning. Before, students need to adjust the method of teaching - learning preferred for the teachers. It is what the teachers thought good and best for them to learn the skills and be ready and prepared for the lifelong journey. While today, the teacher tends to adapt, embrace and adjust the students' preferences of teaching - learning. For the old or mature generations of teachers it would be hard and challenging. For if they don't do it they are not considered the 21st century educators.

As today's young generation, what can you say about the issue? As parents or relatives of the millennials, what are your insights about this?

Education is priceless. The manner or methods of teaching and acquiring knowledge and skills for the student can be varied. There are many “nontraditional” forms of pursuing your educational goals that were unheard of in my generation.

I went the traditional classroom courses route. 4-year university degree. Expenses paid for by scholarships, grants, loans and college work-study.

My husband chose independent study. Still no Internet back then. He received the course materials, taught himself (“independent study”), took two exams (mid term and final), received credits towards his degree. It worked great for us because we were married with children and he could study at home.

My daughter is currently attending college online and pursuing her degree. It's great because transportation to and from classes would be difficult. No car. No bus. But with online study, she has her desk set up and stays in her room.

Social media learning or four cornered classroom is neither here nor there as long as proper education and training is received.

The main thing is that education should be accessible to ALL. Anywhere in the world.

I think that's what social media or online learning has done. Education has been brought to the masses.

Education indeed is one thing that we can only have that no one steal. Whatever the ways, styles, techniques, and methods used in teaching - learning process, the most important is you learnt something applicable as you go on your life's journey ^_^.

I take what I see on most social media with a grain of salt, so I don't consider it "education."

There is another option though - virtual classes. Like, real live classes. My daughter is taking classes now that have a virtual instructor. They sit in a class, but the teacher is broadcast to several classes. I figure there will be a lot more of this before long, since they can pay one teacher to teach lots of kids from different classes/different schools at the same time.

Each teaching modality has its own pros and cons. The modern methods allow.easy memorization and grasping.Even the most boring topics are made interesting and then taught to the kids. The four cornerned classroom teaching allowed more student and teacher interaction. I think it is a combination of both the two methods which works the best.

That bears repeating with an "Amen!" for emphasis.

Not sure but I think virtual classes can be conducted via social media. But yeah! Virtual classes are a great way to pursue your education.

Some of the stuff on social media is educational. Everybody is not out there blowing hot air. I learn a lot of business tips.

Agree. Not to mention that different individuals learn in different ways. My husband chose Independent Study and he excelled. Me? I prefer sitting in a classroom with a teacher. I do well in that kind of environment. I am glad that there now all kinds of ways - traditional and non-traditional ways - to gain access to education.

I prefer classroom since besides learning you also get to meet with different people and learning some social life things.

I've heard a lot of people say they get their news/info from social media. A good deal of their "education" is laughable, but You're right. I was thinking of someone just scrolling through a typical FB page and "learning" from that. Ugh. I gave a bit more thought and came back to expand on that a bit. Like you said, there are some good sources of info as well, tips, ideas....

I greatly agreed to you with that. In today's trend, learn more when there is an integration of old and modern way of teaching.

Classroom learning works for some and online earning works for others. I have tried both and they are suitable for different times.

Online and classroom learnings are both good but not sufficient. For me, one should develop not only intellectual or mental alertness but also develop the physical aspect. It is nicer also if one should develop social aspect. There are people only excelled in classroom but when they are outside they aren't responsive because of lack of self-confidence in interacting people.
