Which free or paid antivirus software would you recommend?

Postby Fergal » 12 Nov 2017, 12:05

When I purchased a new Dell desktop last year it came with one year free McAffe antivirus software. McAfee is about to expire, so I will either renew it or go for a different antivirus solution. I am prepared to pay for a good solution, but obviously if there is a good free option I will go for that.

What would you recommend?

I am happy with AVG free. It takes care of most of the issues. I think for now I won't be investing into paid antivirus.

I like McAffe and that is what I have used in the past. I have Norton right now and I find that is a good option as well. I have never used a free one and I am not sure that I would trust it as much as the ones that I pay for but maybe that is just me.

Windows defender is good antivirus but you need to update it always. Next is Avast antivirus you can download it for free. Their internet security is the best

I greatly recommend ESET. It's very aggressive and no virus and malware can pass thru!!

I too recommend Windows defender, it is reliable and can protect you laptop/pc to maximum limits.

I may be trying AVG too, since i also need something for now. Hope it does not slow ones computer? We cannot always be spending money when there are free stuffs to consider.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your new laptop Amans1234. When you were making that post, did you think it would help to answer my question in any way?

Go for Avira in case you are looking for a free antivirus. It is free for one year and it still works after the trial period is over but with limited features and frequent reminders.

Thanks for the recommendation suny, have you used Avira yourself? Did it keep your device safe?

Yes I am using it on one of my personal laptops for almost 2 years since my official antivirus expired. However, I trust Microsoft' firewall so I don't mind even if Avira's free version has limited features.

I use AVG Internet Security, I think that it's just good enough to protect me from web threats, that's all what I need for now.

I really like Kaspersky. Even the free one isn't bad, but the paid version is really good. It has a full security package (including "safe money" which opens pages like bank, credit card, etc. in a separate, even more secure window). This is a great time of year to try it out, since there are usually some really good deals around black Friday.

I think Amazon has it for like 25 bucks for 3 devices right now (download only), which is good, but sometimes, you can find even better bargains. I think Newegg has it for like $20.00 for one device (although I'm not sure which one that is. I didn't read through the details).

If interested, be sure to look for the one that is good now but also upgrades to the 2018 version at the new year. I like that feature as well.

I'm only using Windows's very own antivirus, the Windows Defender
I think as long as you take precaution, using the free antivirus is good enough

I have tried many but I have settled with Bitdefender. It's light and doesn't slow my computer down but seems to do the trick as I haven't had any problems since I've been using it. I also run Malwarebytes once a week. It usually brings up a load of adware but rarely any malware.
