It could be that your gadget has accumulated a lot of digital 'garbage'. Think of cookies and the like.
Given that you processor is not one of the fastest, massive amassing of such 'trash' could slow your machine seriously.

I advice you to download, install, and run the CCleaner software.

Seems to me that you processor is not supporting very well Windows 10, also depending what are you working maybe you should upgrade RAM.

Well let me start by saying that windows 10 is a real problem. I have an i7 with 6gb ram and ended up formating my pc and installing Linux on it. Windows 10 after installation seems to work fine but with time and with the update you computer gets slower. Windows defender will also help to screw the whole system, I remember all my problems started with it, I couldn't disabled it and every time I tried to install a new anti-virus the system crashed. You can always try to check if it is a spyware issue, try using malwarebytes free to check your system.
Another important point is the one mrki444 refered, RAM is very important when running Windows 10.

My advice to all users who don't play games on the pc and are more or less familiar with commands is to use Linux. I am using Linux Mint Sonya and I m quite happy about it.

Yes, because of the operating system it is happening. Try windows 7 . For 4 gb RAM and your processor windows 7 will be best suit. I am using windows 7 on my i7 processor and 4 gb ram.

I think windows 10 makes it slow. You should install windows 7. Even games have some problems in windows 10. I noticed that.

Windows 10 could run on 4GB RAM but it's better have 8GB, especially when you start multiple browsers with multiple tabs open.

your computer can be slow due to many reasons!
You may have viruses on your computer or you have old hardware with latest softwares running

Windows 10 might not compatible with your computer. I use windows 7 because my laptop is kind of old it's not compatible with windows10. Windows 10 requires higher spec.

It Depends on what you do on your computer. If you do any graphics related work then your GPU that is Graphics card and Ram should be of good specifications...
If you do any nominal work , then your processor should be good and make sure that you keep away from the virus.

I think your computer might have some viruses or malware that makes it to become very slow in terms of using them.

We always think that it's because of the RAM, but often it has different issues. Like viruses, too many applications installed and opened. You can use cleaner to clean up memory and space so you can have more RAM to use.

Is your machine a desktop or a laptop? I'd like to do something similar on a Dell laptop. How would you recommend getting started with that? Do you have any links to info that would help with that?

Generally the computer runs slow when it has temporary garbage files in it. Also, you need to keep cleaning the browser cookies. There might be some hardware issues also.
