Shadow profiles - Facebook knows about you, even if you're not on Facebook
Here is an excerpt:
“Despite the scary-sounding name, I don’t think there is necessarily any malice or ill will in Facebook’s creation and use of shadow profiles.
It seems like a earnestly designed feature in service of Facebooks’s goal of connecting people. It’s a goal that clearly also aligns with Facebook’s financial incentives for growth and garnering advertising attention.
But the practice brings to light some thorny issues around consent, data collection, and personally identifiable information.”
NO DUH!!
In exemplifying and explaining the how and why a shadow profile got created, it seems that somebody who is not even on Facebook got caught in a dragnet and ended up with a shadow profile.
Why was the shadow profile created?
The dragnet was the result a simple task. A person who did have a Facebook profile uploaded their phone contacts to their profile. FB software took those names and created a “shadow profile” … OF ALL OF THE CONTACTS WHO DID NOT HAVE A FACEBOOK ACCOUNT!!
That's the HOW. But WHY???!
Uuuhhh … just in case. You never know … the person might want to open a Facebook account. … Later on. … Eventually. … Some day. ... It could happen.
OK. Seriously? What genius programmer thought of that?
So Facebook just assumes that if you are already on Facebook that ALL YOUR FRIENDS will want to join Facebook too. When that friend decides … guess what? They have a profile ready and waiting for them!
Doesn't that sound SILLY?
It's almost like having a fake Facebook account that a program created for you!
As if Facebook doesn't already have enough problems with REAL fake accounts!!
Yes, I know. REAL fake is an oxymoron.
