Free WiFi precaution measures

Postby ruthmongare » 04 Jun 2018, 16:48

There's this advertisement that usually comes on TV saying that when using a free WiFi you shouldn't access your online banking details because someone might hack your account.Just wondering how's this possible?

With today's advanced technology, such thing may be possible. I am not an IT but there was an instance when I witnessed an IT friend discovered the password of a wifi through my device. So other people may have the ability to discover what sites we visit and what information we have through using public wifi. We should not take chances.

When using free Wi-Fi the best thing to do is to use a VPN, you can find some free VPNs or at least very cheap ones to use.You can also take other measures, if you are using Windows make sure to turn off file sharing and mark the Wi-Fi connection as a public network. You can find this option in the Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change Advanced Sharing Settings. Under the Public heading, turn off the file sharing toggle. About the free VPN I just recall CyberGhost, it is free. I also advice to use only sites with secure connections HTTPS websites.

Free wifi is only good for reading news. You should never use it for access on social network or any personal data related.

I was ignorant before about the risks from accessing free public wifi and yes it is better to use it with VPN to add extra protection.

Free WiFi does not have the WPA 2 encryption embeded in it for extensive use. Once connected to a free WiFi any user can have access to any other users current activity with the WiFi.

Most free WiFi are also scam oriented. Because all actions are controled by a server machine then it's very easy for a hacker to get your bank details if u fill a bank form.

Though i am not a techie person, but I am cautious not to use social media and banking sites while accessing a free wi fi or shared network on public places. I use it only for watching Youtube videos and reading news.

Public WiFi is inherantly insecure. The primary issue is that you may connect to a pineapple - you think you've connected to a legitimate network but you've been duped. This modem/router spies on your internet traffic. Most traffic occurs on HTTPS - so should be relatively secure but if I was connecting to anything important (banking etc.), I would tunnel my traffic through a secure VPN.
