Replacing textbooks with tablets

Postby Netherrealmer » 07 Sep 2018, 18:32

Not All students can afford paying for lockers. Also most textbooks are really heavy. I notice some schools decided to replace books with tablets. These tablets cannot be used for installing app or games. Their sole purpose is for students to read ebooks.

Many oldschool people here will be super against this because they love the feel of a book despite of the millions of trees getting cut down for them.

I wish these textbook tablets existed when I was young because all the back problems I have as an adult came from carrying a backpack with lots of books because my parents refuses to pay for a locker. Many children got back problems because of the heavy textbooks they have to carry on their bag.

I would support the idea because it save the backs of kids who have to carry so many books to school with their rack sacks sagging behind their backs. So long as the tablets are only used for ebooks, i would go for them first hand.

Books can be replaced with tablets but notebooks can't. Kids don't know how to properly hold pencil, can't draw small straight line and similar things. They only know how to click.

I would support the replacement of textbooks with ebooks. They are easily portable, they can provide a variety of options in learning and can be updated easily unlike textbooks.

Yes, that is very true. Most schools nowadays choose to have their textbooks in the tablet starting from certain levels. But I feel that the kids should still learn to borrow books and research books.

Both have their pros and Cons. The text books can be felt physically and if needed we can underline many important things there, we can note down the meanings and tips there by pencil there. They can be read any time without any power source. They are easy to browse. But then they are too heavy to carry. On the contrary we may not have that real feel of text book, it is power dependent and it is prone to get break downs and malfunctions, this is practicable carry it everywhere easily!

School digital textbooks can be highlighted like real books do. Also about the feel of a real book....Kids hate books.

Also bookmarking is actually easier since its digital.

I think this is a good way to help students learn. We are in a new generation where technology is so essential, so the use of tablets instead of textbooks is a good way to embrace technology. As long as teachers become strict such that the students don't use them to play games, then it is a good strategy.

The schools here is turning the text book into digital display screen, not a tablet owned by each student, but just the Over Head Projector. I don't like this way, I love to have text books. :P

I am also experiencing back pain problem because of carrying almost 20 kilograms of books each and every day. In fact, I used to go school by walk.

I am already an adult but the books I have to carry as a student because my parents are too cheap to make me rent a locker still haunts me because of the back pain.

Seems really good at the face of it, but consider the fact that
children will never learn to spell
or their times tables properly.
They will find it hard to do any writing at all.. handwriting will be a thing of the past like a forgotten art.
They will find it difficult to do any tasks that would require them to think.. they would be searching google not encyclopedias..

I agree to what you say about back issues.. the schools could work on scheduling classes in such a way that students don;t have to carry all books everyday.
Text books could be on tablets while note books would be better be real.

They will still learn to write because notebook exists. It's the books that will be replaced. not the note books. Oh tablets do have notebook app where you can write via stylus. The schools I mentioned never replaced notebooks, only text books.

I do support technological advances in studies, but some traditional and conventional things like textbooks should stay there.
