Are Smart Televisions worth the investment

Postby jpk7 » 26 Sep 2018, 08:17

smart televisions are a very talked about subject these days.Smart televisions are able to be connected to the internet. Is there any data on the utility of these televisions in regard to the internet. I don't know how much use are the smart features of these televisions. Is it just hype or they really useful and offer a unique experience. Are they worth the investment?

Dunno how they compare to Chromecast but if they're not miles better than Chromecast then it's probably not worth spending money on.

Never tried any, but now a days, I think a well loaded laptop with a good Internet connection would perhaps offer a lot, and also enable us to watch TV shows and movies.

For some people it's good especially if they have some pay subscription on movie sites.

At least in the US, nearly all "big screen" televisions are now "Smart TVs". It allows the user to connect the TV to the Internet and watch any video you can get online on a television that can be as big as the room. We have a dinky little 60" TV here, but they make them almost as big as the whole wall if you want to go that big.

The catch is in reading the user manual. What a lot of people do not realize is that smart TV technology uses voice commands, and that means the software is always monitoring conversation in your home to listen for those commands. Even worse, many of them have cameras to watch you as you watch TV. They even tell you about it in the fine print in the owners manual.

Once we discovered the spyware technology, we disconnected it from the Internet and just use it as a TV connected to the cable service. No big difference, and the price is a non issue. They keep getting cheaper with every new year model.

Oh, if you don't believe the spy story, do some research. This is just one story that came up with a quick search. There are hundreds just like it to let you know it is not a joke or "conspiracy theory".

I personally don't feel that they are. I stayed in an AirBnB with one of the latest Smart TVs. It was different because it had voice commands. There was no volume up/down or channel buttons. You had to speak into the remote to get it to change the volume or channel. It had all the apps like most smart TVs. My concern with buying one is that they are expensive to replace and the manufacturer may not keep applications up to date. I think an Apple TV or Chromecast or Android TV box is a better investment. You can control everything with your phone and replacing that would cost $100-$200.

Now most of the big screen TV in the market are smart TV. We needed a big screen TV to fit our big living room. We have bought this big screen TV which is a smart TV though we were not specific about the smart features of it. We hardly make use of the smart features and we rarely connect it to Internet.

What are these features and which brand you purchased? How much you were required to pay for that? Do you shop online?
