I stopped using Microsoft word

Postby Netherrealmer » 06 Oct 2018, 09:09

I use to be dependent on Microsoft word when it comes to writing articles because it helps me check my spelling and grammar and I also use to have a need to print documents when I was a student but I stopped using it. My first frustration about it is the fact it loads slow. The moment I click it's icon it takes 7 minutes before it becomes usable. Also I can simply go to websites like grammarly and Word counter to check my grammar errors and word counts.

Everything I can do with it, I can do with my browser. If I needed to save files, I will just save it with notepad. Notepad can be used for printing documents too.

How do you mean it's loads slow? Slow open documents or you use online version so it's slow loading pages?

The software doesn't work with one click. I have to wait for 7 minutes before I can use it. It consumes a lot of ram.

I'm still using Microsoft office 2010.
I know it's a little out of date but it runs perfectly. Is, in fact, super fast in my computers (I use it with windows 10).

If you don't like Microsoft Word and don't want to use your browser you could try open office (it's almost the same that Microsoft Word, but free) ;)

I have not used Word in years. The software is expensive and requires additional expensive upgrades from time to time.

I have been using OpenOffice for years and find it very suitable. It is very similar to word, but it uses free open source software. Upgrades are free and it even lets you know when upgrades are available as you use it.

The package is a free download and includes every option available with Word Professional Office. It even will open and read anything produced by Word, and newer versions of Word can open and read anything from OpenOffice, even though older Word versions may not be able to read OpenOffice documents. Completed documents are much nicer than can be produced with notepad.

I use it all the time and often have half a dozen pages open at a time to work on whichever as I jump from tab to tab. I have never had any delay in opening any page. (Maybe you just need to dump old garbage files and defrag your hard drive.)

You can even open it in any of dozens of different languages. Well worth a look. openoffice.org

Some Open Office people spun off to create Libre Office a few years ago and I like it better. Yes it's also free.

I use Microsoft regularly as we have Office 365 through work. I'm a little surprised that no one mentioned Google Docs in this topic. Is anyone using that, would like to hear your experience of it?

I am so dependent on MS Word for all my writing work. I am using it for more than 2 decades now and have never faced any issue with it. I am so comfortable and used to it that I never thought of leaving it or trying something else.

Docs is mostly browser based software. MS Word is regular offline software.

I use WPS writer, a freeware. The thing I like most is there is a PDF converter function, which help me to convert all the Word document into PDF super fast.

Likewise. Microsoft Word takes forever to load too. That is why I am using Grammarly to check my grammar and spelling. I also use it on my mobile phone.

I often use MS Word online as part of OneDrive. It's also good and works as part of cloud.

I stopped using Microsoft Word when my son gave me a desktop that had OpenOffice software on it. That was almost 10 years ago.

Did you notice any big differences? Fonts, sizes, image sizes? Does it support .docx format?

Nah I hate the intro, where I will wait for 30 seconds before I can type something. I am also recently having some ram problems since my computer at this moment is a potato.

It sounds like you have spent long without upgrading your system. I also use MS word and it loads faster. The one problem I have is that once I start seeing my computer loading slow, I have to change my Windows or use the Clean disk.
