Would you like to live in a cashless country/city?

Postby Netherrealmer » 18 Oct 2018, 19:01

There are now cities in the world where technology had replaced money. People there are only paying either with cards or with an app on their smartphone. Their reason is that thieves and robbers cannot rob a person with no cash. So in this cashless cities you cannot pay food from restaurants or groceries from from a retail store with paper bills and coins. They think these cashless cities have lower crime rate too. They are very vulnerable from hackers though.

People receive their salaries via online transactions. There also no ATM's.

This is not a good idea at all. I just don't feel like its right. I don't think i would be comfortable with that

Hmm, it looks like we are all heading in this direction more everyday. It may soon become the general currency. Which cities are these where they replaced money?

I like cash. It's easier to control how much money I spend. Also, my money can't rob bank. Today everything is okay, tomorrow bank froze my account and then what? I can't buy anything.

NO. Cashless means I have to have something to trade. Cash is easier than owning cows and trying to barter with my neighbor. The days of living in a world without cash only exist in places that are cut off from the modern world. Also, we know what it's like when the computer system goes down and a person can't access their credit card. It's good to have alternatives. Cash is an alternative.

Yeah, absolutely. I'm already living life like that wherein I'm doing things, paying cashless and a few of mobile apps are helping me. I can easily transfer funds, load mobile with call or data online.

Apparently some cashless cities still have atm, and it's purpose is to convert your cash into card load.

I think this has more to do with the mind of the people rather than the cash vs cashless idea. A criminal mind will find ways to breach any system. Maybe the crime rate is lower because of another reason.

Just recently (during Covid-19 outbreak) some establishments went cashless even when conducting in-person business. Now more transactions are taking place digitally. It wouldn't be surprising if more cities have joined the list in becoming cashless. I wouldn't have a problem living in them as long as whatever system is in place works to everyone's benefit.

I would find it difficult to live in a cashless society. The primary reason is that I would be forced to use an Internet-connected device to make all transactions.
I don't think that crime can be eliminated by going cashless. Criminals are bound to adapt and find ways of robbing people. For example, criminals can resort to kidnapping victims and them to transfer cash to their accounts.

Are you referring to using credit card, gift cards ? It is convenient but dangerous because you could lose or misplaced the card and the person who picked it
Up is going to have an enjoyable spending spree

It is not a bad idea, I don't mind but thieves will always be thieves they can steal your phone, bag, things in your house. That does eliminate thieves completely.

You don't have to kidnap anybody. It is enough to hack hotel security system and you can steal all data and money. How can be sure something will not happend in cashless city? How I will pay for food if somebody hack all my accounts or just lock it? It must be some alternative.

I can believe it and apparently there's quite a number like you. A report in The Guardian mentioned that only one in six payments is in cash. It said in there that cash had been declining by roughly 15 percent every year since 2017.

I also notice some companies (small businesses especially) stepping up their cashless game - now refusing coins and bills altogether. People argue that it's discriminatory though, as it alienates those without bank accounts.

While it can be hard for people who are used to having cash in hand to fit in , I can see it going in the direction in the future .

I will have no problem living in such a country. Also in a cashless economy, most of the shady transactions can be easily caught by the government along with the tax defaulters or evaders. I am an honest tax paying citizen and I will have no fear.
