Is the Internet Ruining Comedy? How?

Postby friendociate » 21 Oct 2018, 16:20

This CollegeHumor-video purports to tell us "How the Internet is Ruining Comedy," but the video ends up just being a funny promotion of CollegeHumor's subscription-service.

It does tell us--however--how 'the usual human vices (like greed and hunger etc.)' force us to destroy the comedy-seed before it has a chance to take root and

(off on a tangent there for a second :shh: )

CollegeHumor's manager there tells us how comedy is mostly just 'a jester in the king's court, a jester who has to shut-up when "important messengers" (advertisers, especially the ones who sponsor the comedy but don't want to be connected to anything controversial, people who might be "offended" by comedy that's not gentle & considerate of snowflakes-with-money, etc.) come to tell the royal audience what they need to buy & do to keep the kingdom functioning.'

But--like the church with the most donation-money is the church that gives the greatest glory to their Flying Spaghetti Monster--your favorite comedy-troupe won't be able to deliver the highest quotient of comedy unless you and all your fellow audience-members pay to protect the comedy from the demons of 'not enough!'

You know what, you can thank Pewdiepie and the Paul Brothers for that. Because of their scandals, Youtube have demonetized a lot of adult humor comedy channels . People are forced to make their humor family friendly because of those three jerkbrains who caused the adpocalypse.

How does that mean that it ruined comedy? It just means that site is only paying for family friendly content. Surely there are other sites that will pay for other kinds of content.

Yeah, but 'those other kinds of sites' don't pay the same way, and don't have "the reach" of YouTube.

I remember back when 'online video' was just becoming "a thing"; vloggers posted videos 'because they could,' and not so-much 'because they would get paid to' :ugeek:

The top Youtubers now are not independent content anymore but big corporations using Youtube to make money. I notice a double standard too. Big corporations can have dirty jokes without being demonetized but it is not the case with independent tubers.

And it makes me sick how almost every video of almost every popular YouTuber almost has to have a request from the YouTuber that audience members "Like, Share & Subscribe." I know it's "FREE" to do (once you're already paying for a- or using a FREE-connection & -email), but ... how is asking audience-members to do those things any different than "SOLICITATION" (which goes against Google's guidelines)?

They need to so they can compete with the corporate channels. Jenna Marbles needed subscribers so she can continue her comedy skits or those corporate channels like Troom Troom or T-series will drown her channel. I have no problem with Youtubers doing that because it is the only way to get subscribers.

I know what you mean; but you're forgetting (or maybe never had to know about) the way that they should get subscribers---"organically"---i.e. Google puts the 'subscribe'-button on the video's page, and viewers 'click "Subscribe"' on good videos because 'there's no other way to get an alert when new videos of that YouTuber are produced-&-posted' (usually).

Maybe I should 'follow their pattern' and ask fellow forum-members to "Rep, BeFriend & Subscribe" (to add reputation-points on topics they feel interested in, to add me as a friend (or a foe, I dunno), and maybe they can subscribe to topics they like).

Youtube allows it, if they dont they might have banned Pewdiepie or the Paul Brothers by now. They do encourage Youtubers to tell their subscribers to subscribe and like the video... They say that to all influencers who got invited to their building.

The adsense thing you talk about is more about the bloggers who uses blogspot. Influencers had been told by Youtube to like the video, subscribe to the channel and click the bell icon. If you dont like that part skip the end part of videos. I am more annoyed with corporate videos over independent Youtubers asking for a like or subscribe. it is not Mylot.

And I suppose 'the slave-trade in early America was alright with the government (they say many of the Founding Fathers were slave-owners).'

The Founding Fathers 'allowed it.' And yet slavery became "wrong." ...
