Wireless - Battery Operated Mouse

Postby OldGuy » 22 Nov 2018, 00:22

I use a wireless mouse with my laptop. The touch pad does not provide as many functions. At first, I left it on all the time, but I was replacing the battery quite often. I started using the toggle to turn it off when not in use, but the switch wore out and I had to replace the mouse. I took the bottom plate off my new mouse so I could pop out the battery when not in use. Turning it off when not in use seems to extend the life of the battery by at least a couple of months.

The biggest expense with a wireless mouse is the added cost of batteries. To add a headache to the cost, they die out at the most inconvenient times.

Just wondering if anyone has a similar experience with these power hungry devices.

@OldGuy, I already use wireless mouses for my PC. I've also considered using a wireless mouse whenever I use a laptop. A trackpad doesn't feel natural to me. I prefer wireless mouses over an trackpad because it utilizes your whole hand, rather then one finger. Moving the cursor with one finger is also kind of "slow" for me (don't really know what I mean by this) if you have to repeatedly have to click/touch* (touch trackpads are way better then click, but are also more sensitive), hold and then unclick/untouch, which sucks if you do something speed intensive. I actually play chess as one of my hobbies (I'm not great at it though, still fairly new) and it's kind of annoying when I make moves I shouldn't have because I released my finger off the trackpad so soon on online chess servers which could largely be avoided with a mouse. Grrrrr...

I wouldn't use wired mouses though. I tend to wrinkle those wires quick (Often too short or too long?, sometimes right...), and when spread across something like a table, they become intrusive in my opinion. Largely, my choice comes down to intuition and memory. Their are benefits to each though. For example, Apple's Magic Trackpad has a press sensitivity function; if you press harder then normal on it, it allows you to do second-click actions.

Biggest problem with wireless mouses? Connectivity. Can't tell you how many times the Bluetooth on these things is spotty. Loses connection sometimes in middle of a important task which involves the mouse heavily. Sometimes understand (battery of mouse will be low), other times, happens randomly.

Thanks for your reply. I happen to use a logitech M325 mouse. It has not failed in any connection issue. It does have a tiny plug in module that uses one of the usb ports for a receiver, but once that is in place, the connection is not problem at all. You don't even have to do anything to add it to the hardware.

The advertised price from the factory is quite a bit higher than it is from Best Buy. Shop around. I only paid $15. for mine each time, but the on off switch wore out on that older one sooner than the rest of the device. (I had it for about 10 years, and even switched it from computer to computer as I upgraded, so that could have been part of the issue.)

I frequently watch youtube movies on my laptop when I sack out for the night. I leave the laptop on my desk, but take the mouse to bed with me so I can click "skip" for ads and it even works from that distance across the room.

My only complaint is having to replace the battery so often. Now that I am in the habit of popping out the battery when not using it, a battery lasts about 3 months. I was more wondering about the battery life than anything else. If it were not for that, I would not have any complaint.

You are right about the wires getting in the way and I hated using the touchpad. Those were the biggest reasons I started using the wireless mouse in the first place.

I quit wireless mouse because it's not lasting, will spoil easily when drop to the floor by my kids. Thus, I use the environmental friendly type- no battery required. Haha!

I’d still stick with my wired mouse. It’s easier to use. No need to replace the batteries every now and then, no need to connect to Bluetooth, etc
