Some moderation's obviously required, otherwise total chaos ensues. A lot of people already attempt to circumvent site rules. Imagine what will happen if you have none.
The sad part is often a lot of sites don't impose their rules to the breadth they could. Members in turn begin to take advantage like @
oldbuddy has said.
We are using someone's else's site. I cannot steal your car. I can't steal your home. Those laws are made by governments, but you would agree with them. Some provisions are also made by you. Maybe you don't want visitors on your property. In most countries, that's perfectly legal although that's not a enforced law
As such, when we use something which is under ownership of a another person/company/corporation, they are entitled to certain rights. If you want to stay on the site, follow the rules (if legal...). If you don't want to, you won't be allowed to use the site for long. It's not "yours".
