I am so happy I don't live in Uganda

Postby Netherrealmer » 28 Mar 2019, 09:25

If you are Ugandan, every social media post and log in you have now will be taxed by the government. You are already paying money for your service and now every social media post is now taxed. what a bull manure.

The government there noticed that businesses are able to succeed due to social media posting so they decided it is such a great idea to tax social media activity. 5 Million Ugandans decided to quit using the internet because every data they use is now consumed. Not only their internet is expensive is slow now it is taxed. I use to complain about my country's internet service but I am now thankful for the garbage that I have.

I can't belive how every goverment thinks on same way. Restrict something and everybody will still pay same amount for less service. Like nobody can't say: "People will go or leave service because of restrictions. Less service, less money."

Wow, that's ridiculous! What the hell is that about? The president is also being somewhat petty; trying to control what people discuss among themselves in their own time. This is like a sick joke. Uganda, like Botswana, will already be paying ridiculously high rates. The government probably just wants a new way of fleecing the people and lining their own (already) bloated pockets.

Really?
I really don't know what to say about this... I was perplexed!
Image if others countries copy this idea?
Perhaps this is an action to control people and the internet use... an action behond money interests ;)

It's sad and disappointing to the Ugandan government. Although, I feel that every country has it's pros and cons of internet nowadays. Like in my country, the cost of internet connection is so expensive but the bandwidth is not so great and always have disconnection issues compared to neighbor countries.

It's not problem making Money. Bigger problem is closing down World for your people. No information, knowledge, etc.

This is what greed and abuse looks like. They get their hands into everything of benefit to the people and stifle any kind of progress. All this is not necessary but such is the system we live in.

That's the sad thing... you'll probably find that the dividends will not be used for the greater good but rather for a very small minority who don't even need as much help!

Basically you can still browse the internet and post on forums. It is social media activity like facebook comments, likes and retweets they will tax. You can still watch youtube videos for free but once you make a comment, like or dislike it will be taxed.

Such stupid policies! However, I think there might be other places in this world too, who might think of such policies one day.
And I suspect some idiots within Indian political class too capable of such stupidity!

And in the process "Killing the Goose who lays Golden Eggs?"
They should have read Chanakya, an Ancient India priest and thinker and advisor to Chandragupta Maurya once said that Taxes should be imposed akin to how bees approach their nectors(or something similar).

For abuse, Governments could impose regulations, but taxes are not a good way forward.

I am a Ugandan. I live in Uganda and also do business in Uganda. The social media tax call it over the top or ott was introduced by the Ugandan parliament in July 2018 (read here https://www.thekonsulthub.com/how-to-pa ... el-uganda/).
The tax is not or every post but rather, for all your social activities on selected social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and the likes). In order for you to access any of the selected sites, you must first pay social tax or ott which is valid for a day, week, monthly, quarterly and etc.
This is not only for Ugandans but all people who live in Uganda and access internet from any mobile network in Uganda.
This is not no longer hot news since we are used to that, and a reason may chose the VPN option.

And I'm afraid most of the money will not be used to better and develop Uganda, but fall into the hands of corrupt higher-ups in the government.
