I absolutely think watches ARE redundant. The only reason I'd buy one is if it were so gorgeous I simply couldn't resist it but I'd only wear it as an accessory. I have the time on my phone, computer, microwave, tv, cooker, the car etc and certainly don't need to be spending any more money on a watch. I recently couldn't help laughing when I saw someone advertising one of the plainest watches I've ever seen and NOT a known brand for an eye-popping $250!!

Yes, watches have become redundant in terms of their function but some people like to wear it for accessory purpose. However, my family still wear their watches - old habits die hard.

There are many times when a watch (or smartwatch) is useful eg you're doing some kind of activity where you can't have your phone with you and it's still useful to have the time - a class test, playing sports, an interview, a fitness class.

Besides, we wear lots of things that have no use whatsoever - ties, bracelets, bangles.

If I was answering to this topic five months ago I would say that watches are, nowadays, redundant.
However I´m using MI band 3 since december 2018 and I must say that I'm loving it... With this smart watch I have a bunch of data that interestes me, especially my heart rate.
Perhaps old watches are redundant nowadays, but not smart watches, I think! ;)

I stopped using a watch a long time back. Till a few years back, a trendy watch was a status symbol, but now I feel that seems to have changed.

Yes, I do see some people mad about Smart Watches. But I would rather try buying a High-Mid range smartphone with faster speed, better camera and big name.
(As of today, my recent bought phone is well enough and not costly).

The thing about smartphones is that if you spent £600 on a smartphone in 2013, would it be usable today and what could I sell it for?

I bought an Omega in 2013 for £600 and it's now worth £1600.

lol dude I haven't worn a watch in over 10 years. They're basically bling and nothing else at this point.

Yeah - for many they are. But they also tell the time at a glance. Often you can't get a phone out eg on a tennis court or in an exam.

The best bit is that you have something that can be powered by wrist movement and springs and gears, no electricity. I find that very cool.

People have art in their homes, you can also have art on your wrist.

Watch as watch will soon probably disappear or it will be wear by very small number of people. But watch as part of IoT will be important.

Not really because people still wear watch despite having mobile phone because probably they are used to it or because it is part of their dressing attire.

It will stay as classic stuff when you wear suit. Real man will have real watch, not smartphone.

I'm not a watch person, we don't even have a wall clock at home. The only thing we keep track of time is through smartphone. However, having watch is necessary, we never know when will our phone's battery die.
