According to a recent report in The Guardian, female commuters are turning to technology to address the problem of sexual molestation on Japanese public transportation.

Created by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, the aim of the Digi Police app is to protect victims of sexual misconduct in crowded places. Quite fitting, as the issue of groping has reached epidemic proportions, particularly on rush-hour trains, when it can be difficult to identify the perpetrator.

Victims are now able to alert other passengers by simply activating the app. This announcement will come as a loud-pitched voice shouting "stop it," or in the form of a full-screen message stating "there is a molester, please help."

From what I remember schoolgirls are the biggest target of groping in Japan.

It's a possibility as most of the interviews I saw on groping were being conducted on school grounds. Some of the girls appeared shy while communicating that it hasn't happened to them personally but they know of others who have been groped.

The news reports tend to focus on how rampant the problem was on packed trains especially.

I can't belive such things are happend in Japan and nobody response for help. If somebody is yelling for help, you must approach and help or atleast call somebody which can.

Often they are not yelling for help because the situation is embarrassing. Folks will come to their aid if they know of the harassment. I saw a video in which one guy grabbed and put a molester in a headlock. The girl wasn't screaming or anything but he could see what was happening and that she was uncomfortable.
