Spotify Demanding Refunds from "Overpaid" Artists

Postby Lushh » 26 Jun 2019, 02:43

Streaming giant Spotify has claimed that many of its publishers were overpaid in 2018 and now the company is asking for its money back. Some are not pleased about this and find it a bit hypocritical.

Last year when the Copyrights Royalty Board voted to increase songwriter payouts by 44%, Spotify was one of the first (along with Amazon, Pandora, and Google) to file an immediate appeal of the decision.

David Israelite, CEO of the National Music Publishers Association has voiced his opinion on Spotify's recent behaviour:
"I find it so hypocritical for a digital service that is appealing the CRB decision to then take advantage of the parts of that decision that benefit it. I guess we shouldn't be surprised."

What about you? Do you think Spotify should take a seat and leave the publishers alone? I really do think their behaviour is hypocritical though. Check this out, you're appealing a decision but at the same time you're trying to gain from that same thing you're appealing. :?

This is the reason why Taylor Swift dont want her songs on spotify. She rather sell her songs.

Be like Taylor. Taylor is smart :) Yeah I saw online some publishers saying Spotify is just a selfish tech company that doesn't care about them. Many of them seem to think they weren't getting paid well in the first place. It would be interesting if they all left.

Wow, that's just strange and highly unprofessional. If the artists were overpaid then surely it's not their mistake. Spotify needs to take a seat and cut its losses. It'd done. To retrospectively demand money back makes it look incompetent.

Highly unprofessional it is. And what makes it worse is that last year there was a vote to increase payouts to publishers by 44% and they opposed the board's ruling but now they are using it to demand a refund. :|
