Somerville, Massachusetts became the second US city to place a ban on the use of facial recognition technology in public spaces. Sponsored by the city council, the legislation was approved by a vote of 11 to 0.

The ordinance bars city departments and agencies from using the technology, citing invasion of privacy and concerns of misidentification, particularly in women, young people, and non-whites.

The city of San Francisco was the first in the US to forbid the use of automated face recognition by government agencies in their investigations and local surveillance.

My thoughts exactly but don't you think they (ones using this tech) considered these things too?

I hate China so much. They are the worse system of government in history!
Also I think it's great they are banning this kind of tech in the US.
They need to ban it all. Other wise we will wear masks and hoodies
and they will still not know who we are. :D

It seems like other cities are soon to follow. Some have already taken steps to minimize abuse of this technology. Oakland and Berkeley are debating the matter of whether they too should ban.

I think the more popular it becomes, the more we'll hear of communities across the world debating how to use it. Just like any other technology it can be abused, so steps have to be taken to regulate its use, if not an outright ban.
